Names you love but could never use

Just for fun, what names do you love, but can’t use for whatever reason?

I really love Zelda, after Zelda Fitzgerald, but I feel they’d be teased because of the video game.

Anais is also cute. But I foresee lots of issues with pronounciation, and it kind of looks like anus!

Augustus - loved it for a little boy. But I feel people will forever associate it was Augustus Gloop.

What are yours?

Damien - already have a DC with an angelic sounding name so would seem like we were trying to polarise them into good and evil!
Ariel - damn washing powder...
Xanthe - met a very strange person called this and unfortunately I can't shake the connection
Tobias - love it but it's a significant ex's name

Hero. My absolute favourite, but don't think I could in reality.

Hazel, always loved it but husband was having none of it

Sorry! Had to feed the baby. Yes, my surname means I would never be able to have a baby girl called Florence! So I settled for Rose Anna instead!

Hepsibah! I absolutely love it but feel it's a bit out of our range 😂

I love Rain. But her surname is Hatton. Rain hat on

I wasn't brave enough for Gabriel or Raphael. Penelope is a bit too much with our P surname.

Demelza.. too ott. Ditto Arriety. Cousin nicked Fern (unintentionally) and DH vetoed Lois which I LOVE. 2 daughters lots of naming dramas and ironically we have a boys name which we agreed on in 2 seconds flat!

We wanted Hazel but it clashed with our surname. She has it as a middle name instead.

Nancy. Love the name but it was my late Aunt's name (I never met her) and it would have caused all sorts of issues in my wider family if we'd used it.

Otis. Love this name and it was top of my boy's list. We didn't have a boy so it went unused. Fortunate really as DH vetoed it for no tangible reason, which could well have caused a major rift in our marriage if DC2 had turned out to be a boy! (Slightly lighthearted. A veto is ok even on a favourite name, but it needs some sort of reason. And ideally a half-decent one. Just "No" doesn't count.)

Am a big fan of the elaborate name: Sheherezade or Persephone etc. Poor imaginary child would be known as Sher or Pers by my family who shorten everything.

I LOVE Raphael, Wilfred, Frederick, Alfred, Rafferty, William and Raine....but they all clash with my surname so I can't use them.
I also love the name Brianna. However, my name is Joanna, and my Husband is called Bryan...people would think we'd amalgamated our names if we went with Brianna...and I don't want that!

Oscar- always loved it, age 12 got a dog and called it Oscar. 🙈 much loved dog who is still going at 15 years old 😍

Bear- because no-one in my family would take the name seriously

Oooo my name has been mentioned a few times! Interesting.

I love unusual names and some of the ones mentioned I think are wonderful. I think there would have to be a very, very good reason for me not choosing a name I love. My son has an unusual name but with a very normal/common middle name that he can opt to use instead of his first name as he gets older if he decides he hates his first name.

I have some amazing (probably not by MN standards ) names through my family tree - Cinderella, Hepzibah, Merlin, Frampton, Royal, Oserus, Philidelphia, Britannia, Queenie, Patience, Vanslow, Amadine, Kisby, Israel, Methusalah, Providence, Cinamenta, Onisophorus, Rice ... !! The more unusual the name the easier it is for me to trace when doing the family tree. Most of those names are from my Romany side, my mums side (Welsh), are impossible to find because they're all Evan Evans, Thomas Lewis etc - of which there are hundreds

Mine would be:
Girls- Eden, Milly, Lena, Letty or Harriet.
Boys- Raphael, Atticus, Arthur or George.
All were mentioned when I was pregnant but DH hated all of them.

missteri love your post! Im (distant) part romany and some of the names you mention have been in my family, plus a Clarence for me!

I love Helena but my best friend named her DD Helen so I took it off my list. Didn’t matter though as we had a boy. Really loved Jack, too, but couldn’t sell it to DH!

Willow, but Theres no way I'd have a willowy child.
