Violette
I would pronounce it like violet.

I know I could just use the English spelling but I think the French spelling is quite pretty. But how do you see it

Vi-let or Vio-lette

Vy - Oh - Let
I think a bit harder on the end consonant and more “Eh” than with violet

Singlenotsingle · 04/05/2018 23:01

It's Vee-oh-let

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 04/05/2018 23:01

Vee-oh-let.

Viviennemary · 04/05/2018 23:02

I agree with Single. That's how it should be pronounced with that spelling.

Namechange128 · 04/05/2018 23:02

Vee oh let.
But I'd go with Violet, it's a little bit vintage and very gorgeous, and Vi is a cute nickname.
Violette feels flouncy and a bit Hyacinth Bu-ckay

Etymology23 · 04/05/2018 23:02

I think I would pronounce it Vee-o-leht with the o just touched on and an ‘eh’ at the end being like the e in dress.

Wildlingofthewest · 04/05/2018 23:02

Veye-oh-let

user545787 · 04/05/2018 23:05

Vee-o-let

It’s a different name to Violet, not just a pretty spelling. It’s a bit like calling your kid Enrique but expecting people to know it’s supposed to be Henry 😉 She’ll have a lifetime of being called the ‘wrong’ name.

CoolCarrie · 04/05/2018 23:10

Vee- Oh - Let, it is a lovely name and it’s definitely not Violet! Violette Szabo was a very brave member of SOE during WW2. She was parachuted In Occupied France in 1944. Look out for the film Carve Her Name With Pride starring Virginia McKenna which is about her life.

GettingBackToMe · 04/05/2018 23:11

I'd definitely say Vee-o-let

If you choose the French spelling but not the French pronunciation she will always be having to correct people, which I imagine would get a bit wearing.

BroomstickOfLove · 04/05/2018 23:16

Vee-o-let.

ChristineC320 · 04/05/2018 23:17

Enrique and Harry are the same meaning but obviously different in Spanish and English. Where as Violette and Violet are also the same meaning but not so wildly different in spelling.... no idea why you had to make such an over the top example and cover up your know it all rudeness with a wink.
Fake. if your gonna be mean and unhelpful just do it and don't skirt around it.

I would have said
V-eye-oh-let
(I'm assuming that's wrong though by the other comments)

SugarMiceInTheRain · 04/05/2018 23:24

Vee oh let
Pretty name, as is Violet. I'd be inclined to use the latter spelling to avoid a lifetime of confusion Smile

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 04/05/2018 23:28

Violette is vee oh let.its definitely not prounced violet
If you want the name pronounced violet call her violet

Lavalamped · 04/05/2018 23:29

Vio-lette

FairyFantastic · 05/05/2018 00:26

Vee-oh-let
I feel your pain OP. Violet is DD's chosen name, but I did seriously consider Violette for some time in regards to spelling. However I studied French and can't get past the 'correct' pronunciation even though I would have loved to have used it!

RedDwarves · 05/05/2018 03:07

Vee-oh-let.

If you want vy-let, spell it Violet and save your daughter a lifetime of grief.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 05/05/2018 03:11

Vee-oh-let

Whereas Violet is Veye-o-let.

So the French spelling has a long E pronunciation and the English version has a long I pronunciation.

mathanxiety · 05/05/2018 03:40

Vee-uh-lett.

Violet is Vy-uh-lett.

The difference in spelling is only slight, you are right, but one is definitely the French spelling and with that goes the French pronunciation.

vampirethriller · 05/05/2018 08:14

Vee o let

dietcokemango · 05/05/2018 08:16

Vee-oh-let with the emphasis on the let.

flumpybear · 05/05/2018 08:17

Veee oh letta
