Violette. How would you pronounce this?

Violette
I would pronounce it like violet.

I know I could just use the English spelling but I think the French spelling is quite pretty. But how do you see it

Vi-let or Vio-lette

Bold failure

HelenaJustina · 05/05/2018 08:19

Vee-oh-lett

Frazzled2207 · 05/05/2018 08:30

Vee o lett

I also think violette has three syllables whereas Violet has only two (vye-let).
Both nice but pronounced very differently

sonnyboo · 05/05/2018 10:01

Vee-o-lett

insancerre · 05/05/2018 10:08

Vy oh let

JoffreyMonfrere · 05/05/2018 10:12

Vee-Oh-Let

sonnyboo · 05/05/2018 10:15

Vee o LETT (emphasis on LETT)

Pfftlife · 05/05/2018 10:28

It's going to be a lot of hassle for your daughter growing up having to explain every time how to spell it. I would use Violet

sonnyboo · 05/05/2018 11:35

I prefer Violette and Violetta to Violet (as I don't like the vile part)

campion · 05/05/2018 11:46

As mathanxiety says : vee-uh-let. You wouldn't emphasise the 'o' sound in the middle, just the first and last syllables more or less equally.

I know a Violette and she hates being called Violet!

Agustarella · 05/05/2018 12:05

It's going to be pronounced the French way by most people. It's not like Isabel/ Isabelle where you can change the spelling but keep the sound.

Pretty name though.

flissfloss65 · 05/05/2018 12:08

With the ette on the end I would say Vy o letta.

Shampaincharly · 05/05/2018 12:12

She could be nicknamed vile

AuntieStella · 05/05/2018 12:19

Vee-o-let

As in Szabo 'Carve Her Name With Pride'

I don't know if younare naming because of that association, but it is a brilliant one

LesLavandes · 05/05/2018 12:28

Lovely name. Violette would be my choice people will learn to pronounce properly. I have had same problem

IsadoraQuagmire · 05/05/2018 13:17

Vee-o-let. Because it's French. It would be totally confusing to pronounce it Violet.

sonnyboo · 05/05/2018 13:21

It's not like Isabel/ Isabelle where you can change the spelling but keep the sound

Even Isabel and Isabelle sound different, with Isabelle emphasising the ELLE, so IsaBEL rather than ISAbel.

Agustarella · 05/05/2018 13:34

@sonnyboo Blimey, you are right! I've been calling French Isabelles Isabel for all this time, and never realised it. My French boyfriend does indeed stress the last syllable of Isabelle and he should know.

I have form for this because I've also been calling someone Annelie whose name is actually Nelly. I only found this out when exchanging messages with my boyfriend. Me: 'Annelie will tell everyone that you are buying her sister's house'. Him: 'Who's Annelie?' Me: 'That gossipy postwoman.' Him: 'Ah, you mean la Nelly!'

celtiethree · 05/05/2018 13:35

Really not getting the Isabel vs. Isabelle difference. I’d pronounce both the same.

Violette and Violet are both great names!

Agustarella · 05/05/2018 13:46

@celtiethree Isabelle pronounced Isabel wouldn't be a problem in English speaking countries, unless someone wanted to make a point of pronouncing it the French way. Like my ex headmaster who would always call me CharLOTTE with exaggerated smirky emphasis on the second syllable, as if to emphasise what a comically ungainly sound it has.

celtiethree · 05/05/2018 13:53

@agustarella thx! I shall refrain from trying my pronounciation in French speaking countries. I’m also happy that I’ve not been mispronouncing my DM’s name Smile

Agustarella · 05/05/2018 13:57

@celtiethree Fortunately the French are very tolerant of the English and their mispronunciations if my experiences are anything to go by. ;)

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 05/05/2018 14:01

I'd just aassume it was a posher way of spelling Violet.

Mum2OneTeen · 05/05/2018 14:07

Vye-oh-lett-eh

BakedBeans47 · 05/05/2018 14:09
