And how would you pronounce it?

Never heard/seen the name before, but not really a fan. I would pronounce as A-nase [rhyming with base] or An-ice

pipilangstrumpf · 01/05/2018 11:32

I'd pronounce it as it is written: An-a-ise (emphasis on ise). Nice name.

Watto1 · 01/05/2018 11:32

Ann ace would be how I would pronounce it. I think it's usually spelled without the e though - Anais.

fearfultrill · 01/05/2018 11:34

An-ny-ees. But spent Anais. It's French

GinIsIn · 01/05/2018 11:36

An- eye-eess

Pikachuchu · 01/05/2018 11:38

Yes, it's Anais, no 'e' on the end. An-ny-ees.

Ohyesiam · 01/05/2018 11:40

I’ve never seen it with an e on the end, but I do know that English people pronounce it lots of different ways
Anay
An-eye-eese
An-eye-s
And probably more.
I think the correct (French) pronunciation is the third one.

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 01/05/2018 11:42

An eye iss is the only correct pronunciation. The French name has two dots over the i, and when you see that you pronounce the last letter.

So mais (but) is pronounced may, but Moët is pronounced Mow ett.

DougFargo · 01/05/2018 11:44

If you can't spell it you probably shouldn't use it, is a good general rule for choosing names.

Pebblespony · 01/05/2018 11:50

I'd pronounce Ann-ace too. Sounds like she'd spend half her life explaining how to pronounce it.

tinykirst · 01/05/2018 11:54

I love the name Anaïs and would pronounce it as 'A-nay' but I think the French pronunciation is 'An-ays'

BlancheM · 01/05/2018 11:55

I would pronounce it like Anaïs but soften the 's' as there's an 'e' on the end. A bit like the sound of the 's' in 'Japanese'. It doesn't really flow tbh

KirstenRaymonde · 01/05/2018 11:57

It’s Anais and pronounced An-eye-ees. It’s a lovely name, though not one I’d choose personally. You would be explaining the pronounciation to people, but once they’ve got it they’ll be fine.

BlancheM · 01/05/2018 12:00

Eloïse is similar to the sound you're after and people won't struggle with it.

midsummabreak · 01/05/2018 12:08

Choose the name you love. Anais or Anaise are both lovely names.

DougFargo · 01/05/2018 12:09

They aren't though, one is a name and one is a mispelling of a name.

KanyeWesticle · 01/05/2018 12:11

An-eye-eese.

It should be Anais (no e) and pronounced An-eye-iss I think

midsummabreak · 01/05/2018 12:11

Rules were meant to be broken

midsummabreak · 01/05/2018 12:12

Or choose the original spelling .,.,,as you prefer

juneau · 01/05/2018 12:13

I think maybe if you can't spell it and don't know how to pronounce it, another name would be a better choice!

They aren't the dickheads and making up your own spelling of a name isn't "going for something different". If you want your kid to have a lifetime of having her name spelled wrong (actually right) and people assuming her parents were unable to look it up and get it right in the first place, then go ahead.

LivLemler · 01/05/2018 12:45

Changing the spelling changes how a word is pronounced, and that's going to cause even more confusion with a name where the pronunciation can cause confusion anyway.

You wouldn't call your son Ben but spell it Been.

WanderingTrolley1 · 01/05/2018 12:46

I would pronounce “an-ay”.

Wolfiefan · 01/05/2018 12:48

Dickheads?
Nice.
Youneeq spelling. I wouldn't.
