And how would you pronounce it?

I really like it but when I suggested it to my DH he very quickly pointed out how much it sounds like anus and could open up a whole potential mess of name calling. Kids are cruel and I couldn't do that to my child.

harrietm87 · 01/05/2018 12:52

But op are you just going for a different spelling or do you also want a different pronunciation?

The way you've spelled it means it will be pronounced differently from the original name Anais (an-eye-ees). If you want an-eye-ees then you need to spell it correctly.

Afaik there is no such name as "a-nace" (which is how your spelling would be pronounced), so you'd be making up a name that is confusingly similar to another one. People would likely assume you just couldn't spell and/or pronounce Anais.

Either way it's a lifetime of frustration for your daughter.

Love the Ben/Been analogy from the pp!

ShotsFired · 01/05/2018 12:53

@LivLemler You wouldn't call your son Ben but spell it Been.
Don't go giving people ideas! Grin

All I can think of with Anais is that perfume from the 80s/90s.
We all called it "Anay-Anay" till we learnt the proper posh way and then pretended we knew it was "an-eye-eess-an-eye-eess" all along.

ShotsFired · 01/05/2018 12:56

Remember?

It does appear to be a name in its own right:

I prefer it to Anais as that reminds me of the perfume.

LillianGish · 01/05/2018 12:56

I think you are letting her in for a lifetime of telling people how to spell it (and then explaining why she’s spelling it wrong) and how to pronounce it (accepting that many people will not remember even after being told). If you’re OK with that then go ahead. For the record, I live in France where it is spelt Anaïs and pronounced Ann-eye- eese - reasonably common here. Lovely name.

SoftSheen · 01/05/2018 13:05

Anaise is pronounced 'An-ay-zee'

Anais is pronounced 'An-eye-iss'.

So two totally different names: pick whatever you prefer. Or better, consider something more straightforward that won't lead to a lifetime of mispronunciation and misspelling.

Whatyoureckonwhatyoureckon · 01/05/2018 13:18

Indeed it is a name, albeit probably not the French name we all know from the perfume! I do take the point that it may be setting her up for a lifetime of correcting pronunciation!

I haven't actually seen any correct suggestions for pronunciation of Anaïs yet on this thread Grin

It's An-eye-eece (the last bit rhymes with 'fleece').

Whatyoureckonwhatyoureckon · 01/05/2018 13:24

Sorry to answer a question, I particularly like the pronunciation Ann - Ace which is why I thought it might be clearer with the E on the end

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 01/05/2018 13:25

Ann Ace?
You could always spell it like that.
To a PP I prefer Ben spelt as Bean myself! Grin

PenelopeFlintstone · 01/05/2018 13:33

And how would you pronounce it?

I would pronounce it Ann-eye-eece and think you'd spelt it wrongly.

It's so close to the other name that a lot of people will do that, I think.

SomeKnobend · 01/05/2018 13:33

I think putting an e on will not make clear that you want that pronunciation. It'll just look like the parents didn't know how to spell or wanted a yooneek spelling due to being a bit rough around the edges.

PenelopeFlintstone · 01/05/2018 13:37

Aren't there lots of suggestions on here where the last syllable rhymes with fleece?
eess ees

Whatyoureckonwhatyoureckon · 01/05/2018 13:37

Ok points taken, thanks folks

DougFargo · 01/05/2018 13:38

being on "babynamespedia" does not make it a name. Lots of other misspellings, made up shite and mistakes are on there as well!

pipilangstrumpf · 01/05/2018 13:38

Anaise is pronounced 'An-ay-eece'

Anais is pronounced 'An-eye-iss'.

Well that's what I would say.

DougFargo · 01/05/2018 13:42

Nope

Wolfiefan · 01/05/2018 13:42

Doug I wish I could like that post!

penguinsandpanda · 01/05/2018 13:44

Well it appeared very popular in 1887:

DougFargo · 01/05/2018 13:45

Did it? Where? Spelled how exactly?

As if someone didn't draw that graph on Paint!

TatianaLarina · 01/05/2018 13:46

If you want her to be called Annace (each to their own) - why not spell it how it sounds rather than misspelling another name?

With Anaise will never be clear whether you meant Anaïse - which would be pronounced An eye eese or whether you meant Anayse.

There would also be confusion between aze and ace.

TroubledLichen · 01/05/2018 13:52

Anaise looks like you got the spelling and the pronunciation of Anaïs wrong, which is a lovely name and should be pronounced as a PP has said, to rhyme with fleece: Ann-Eye-Eece. Established spellings exist for a reason; so that people know how to pronounce a name. Yoonique spellings make you look like you can’t spell and sets your child up for a lifetime of correcting people.

hildabaker · 01/05/2018 13:54

I think it would be a pretty name if your surname has just one syllable.
