What do people think of the name Brody/Brodie? Which spelling is preferable? Are there any associations - negative or positive? Thanks!

And are there any alternatives that would have a similar feel that we may like to consider? Thanks!

I like it, spelled Brodie.

But with any speIling, I think it's only good on a boy. I've known a few girls named Brodie and it never seems to suit them.

AllPowerfulLizardPerson · 26/04/2018 21:21

I'd think 'Homeland'

It's a surname used as name, and the character is male. I definitely see it as a boys name

FATEdestiny · 26/04/2018 21:23

My dog's name is Brodie.

AyeWhySwim · 26/04/2018 21:26

It’s definitely for a boy. And is a traditional Scottish name isn’t it? Rather than just a surname-turned-first name? Am I right in thinking that?

It's one of these names with uncertain origins, but it seems to most likely be derived from Brud, the name of several Pictish kings. It definitely predates the use of surnames, and in its modern form has been recorded as a forename since c1750, so yes, I'd say it's pretty traditional!

Wow @HoratioNightboy! Thanks for the in depth knowledge! Not that there’s anything wrong with surname names either though.

I like Brodie, for a boy.

I prefer the Brodie spelling.

You're welcome AyeWhy! Scottish names are my hobby, hence the nerdiness...

boymum9 · 26/04/2018 21:46

I love it, we were between that and another name for ds2, we went with the other name and I still kind of regret it!

AyeWhySwim · 26/04/2018 21:49

Gutted - turns out DH dislikes it

Im scottish and I think l Brodie is the boy's spelling and Brody is the girls spelling from what and who I know. Im not 100% sure how factual that is but the 2 Brodie boys I know are spelt that way and the 1 girl Brody I know is spelt this way. Hope this helps!! Its a lovely name. The Red King I think its meaning is. It so happens two of the Brodies i know have red hair!!

chezmk1988 · 26/04/2018 22:24

I like it. I would spell it Brodie

TatianaLarina · 27/04/2018 09:28

Brodie is Scottish, Brody is Irish.
