Emelie?

31 weeks pregnant with our first and DP and I have just suddenly decided tonight that we love this name Grin
I have a few questions though:
-how would you pronounce it?
(We like it pronounced Em-eh-lee)
-would you presume we had misspelled ‘Emily’ or recognise it as a name in it’s own right?
-what do you think of these combinations of middle names: Emelie Aoife, Emelie Eléa (El-ay-uh), Emelie Mabel, Emelie Ffion, or are there any other middle names you like?
Thanks for any input, I’m such an indecisive person I’m not sure we’ll ever have a name!

I would assume it was Emily, yes. Second to that, I would assume it was spelt Emilie.

Emelie Mabel is the best of your list, but I would spell it Emily to save her a lifetime of grief.

NutCase82 · 21/04/2018 21:32

Think it's the French way of spelling it, sure there's a film called it too???

DramaAlpaca · 21/04/2018 21:34

Honestly? I'd privately think you hadn't been able to decide between Emily & Amelie so combined the two.

It's a pretty name though.

Strax · 21/04/2018 21:36

The French film is Amelie.
I'd assume it was Emily too, and you're bound to get that as the pronunciation. In which case, why not use Emily?

SoftSheen · 21/04/2018 21:36

It sounds nice, but you will save a lot of trouble if you chose either Amelie or Emily.

RedDwarves · 21/04/2018 21:36

The French spelling is Emilie; the film is Amelie.

peachypetite · 21/04/2018 21:37

You mean Emily?

trueblueari · 21/04/2018 21:44

I'd pronounce it Emily, and I prefer Emilie to both your spelling and the original.

As for middle names I like Emilie Rae or Emilie Hope.

Nevth · 21/04/2018 21:45

DO NOT DO IT. I'm assuming one of you are Scandinavian? I have that name, with that exact spelling, and it absolutely sucks. It's just Emily at the end be of the day. At work, I don't get emails because people assume I'm Emilie despite me spelling the name out. At interviews, people have called Émile, thinking I'm a French man. I cannot emphasise enough how important it is for you to not burden your child with that spelling.

I'm changing my spelling to Emily in a few months, because practically it just doesn't work. Do not ever give your child a name that is pronounced the same as a common name, but spelt differently.

Enwi · 21/04/2018 22:16

Thanks for the input everyone. We haven’t gone with Emily as it is actually a different pronounciation- Em-i-Lee as oppose to Em-eh-Lee.
I’m an Eleanor pronounced el-en-OR. People are forever calling me el-en-A but it’s never really bothered me.
When I searched on baby name websites, it suggested Emelie was an old fashioned name in its own right which I liked... but if no one knows that it may as well just be Emily, I see your point Grin

I think it's pretty.

I also love Emerline

Nevth · 21/04/2018 22:41

@enwi I'm sorry, I was probably quite harsh there (years of suffering/misplaced emails/etc)! But I think it's a sensible decision Smile

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 21/04/2018 22:50

I recognised it as Emelie straight away.
I love Emelie Elea (Elaya).
Other mn suggestions.

Heratnumber7 · 21/04/2018 22:57

Emerline Grin

ShinyShooney · 21/04/2018 22:58

It looks like you misspelt Amelie.

OR a "desperate to be different" spelling of Emily.

So kind of uneducated... sorry.

She would have s lifetime of spelling out a very basic name and people will pronounce it Emily depending on their accents.

chezmk1988 · 21/04/2018 23:02

I'd say it Emily but it does look like a mis spelling

tigerrun · 21/04/2018 23:03

I would presume it was Emily, but spelt wrong. Amelie is nice too. I’d listen to the pp who has the name and take her advice!

TheDowagerCuntess · 22/04/2018 03:34

Why not go with one of your middle names and make Emelie the middle name. Eléa is lovely.

TroubledLichen · 22/04/2018 03:44

Yeah... I know you’ve explained but without that context I would assume you’re trying way too hard to be yooonique and Emily and Amelie were far too mainstream for you. And insert massive eye roll. Everyone will pronounce it as Emily and everyone will misspell it (sorry!!).
