Help with Traditional(ish!) Names

Not currently pregnant but starting TTC in a few months.

Which combos do you like for a girl from these? And can you suggest any boys names? We can't agree on any of those haha!

I have an unusual name which I've always hated so would like to stick to something more popular for future children.

Emmeline (NN Emmy) - Olivia - Maisie - Eve - Libby - Florence - Charlotte - Alice - Madeleine - Maeve - Thea - Flora

TIA! Smile

PS. First post on MN so hoping it all works out Hmm I've been adventurous with the smileys and fancy words!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Arapaima · 15/04/2018 18:34

Personally I'm not that keen on Madeleine, Maeve or Flora. The others are all lovely!

Arapaima · 15/04/2018 18:36

Boys - how about Edward, Alexander, Joshua, Christopher?

PeapodBurgundy · 15/04/2018 18:36

DD due in August will be Elizabeth Alice (first and middle name, not double barrelled) so you could get Libby and Alice nicely together in my opinion :-)

DS is Joshua Robert (again first and middle name). If we were expecing a boy this time he would have been Edward James.

happytobemrsg · 15/04/2018 18:36

Of your list I like
Olivia
Florence
Thea

PeapodBurgundy · 15/04/2018 18:36

Cross posted with Arapaima, but nice suggestions Grin

MikeUniformMike · 15/04/2018 18:41

Emmeline (NN Emmy) - prefer Emma
Olivia - Lovely but too popular. Don't like Olly
Maisie - No.
Eve - lovely but very popular. I like Evie.
Libby - ok short for Elizabeth
Florence - ok but I'm not keen. Prefer Flora
Charlotte - ok
Alice - like it a lot
Madeleine - No. It's nice but unhappy association.
Maeve - not sure
Thea - popular but I'm not keen. Might get said as Fear.
Flora - lovely

I'd say Flora.

Threeandabit · 15/04/2018 18:56

I don't really like Thea, as it's an anagram of the word Hate. Also can't hear the name Madeleine without thinking of poor Madeleine McCann.

I like all the others. Smile

For a boy, how about: -

Nathan
Nicholas
Noah

Jesse
Michael
Leo

Harry
Stanley
Isaac

Ross
Christopher
Freddie

Off the top of my head, they're some of the boys at my child's nursery.

RoundaboutSnail · 15/04/2018 20:37

I like these:

Emmeline (NN Emmy)
Olivia
Maisie
Eve - nice but Eve/Ava/Evie/Eva/Ivy and similar have been very popular recently

VileyRose · 15/04/2018 20:39

I am an Emmeline/Emmie and I wouldn't say it was too popular. I spend my life spelling out my name. I like it though ;-)

Peachbubble · 15/04/2018 20:45

I like Emmeline, Charlotte, Alice and Flora

Mybabystolemysanity · 15/04/2018 20:47

I have a Felicity. New baby will be Stanley. If he was a girl he would be Roxanne Isobelle.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 15/04/2018 20:48

Classic names from my childhood that seem to be almost exotically unusual now...

Michael
Christopher
Stephen
Lawrence

Elizabeth
Mary
Louise
Sadie

RavenWings · 15/04/2018 21:40

Emmeline (NN Emmy) - nice
Olivia - much too popular imo. I know you wanted popular, but this one is way overdone
Maisie - weak, insipid, infantilising
Eve - very pretty
Libby - love it
Florence - meh
Charlotte - nice
Alice - meh
Madeleine - ok
Maeve - like it a lot
Thea - personally no, can't stand the Fear pronunciation it gets in some accents
Flora - spreads easy. No.

I'd use Libby or Maeve.

On boys names, I'm guessing you want currently popular so names like Oliver, Thomas, Samuel would fit.

gruffalopuffalo · 15/04/2018 21:44

Olivia, Alice and Maeve are my favourites from your list.

I would always assume Libby is a nickname, not a name in itself, so she might get asked a lot what her "full name" is.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 15/04/2018 21:49

Love Florence with nickname flora

Charlotte and Alice are also lovely
Libby is a great nickname but i would use Elizabeth as her full name.
Not keen on the others.

Boys names how about Edward, George, Oliver, Harry?

auntyflonono · 16/04/2018 17:38

Libby short for Elizabeth
Antonia
Adelaide
Henrietta

Henry
Edward
William
Arthur

kaytee87 · 17/04/2018 08:50

Emmeline (NN Emmy) - nice but prefer Emma
Olivia - bit too popular
Maisie - makes me think of a pet
Eve - ok
Libby - much prefer Elizabeth
Florence - makes me think of Aunt Flo
Charlotte - nice
Alice - ok
Madeleine - hate the nn maddy which is inevitable
Maeve - ugly
Thea - unfinished
Flora- margarine

Katharine?

Boys names;

James
Matthew
Robert
Edward

17caterpillars1mouse · 17/04/2018 09:31

Emmeline (NN Emmy) - Emmeline is lovely and I'm considering it myself but worried if shortened to Emmy she will get lost in a sea I Emily's and Emilia's. I do love Emily but it's just so popular

Olivia - I know quite a few who puts me off. I prefer Olive. Love Oli on a girl and also like Liv

Maisie - not a fan. It sounds too cutesy for an adult

Eve - I like Eva and Evelyn but not Eve strangely. It sounds harsh to me

Libby - not as a full name

Florence - love it but it's getting so popular

Charlotte - I really like it but dislike Charley and Lottie is getting too popular for me

Alice - I like it but if I suggest it husband just says 'Who?' Every time

Madeleine - love Madeline. Madeleine is nice too

Maeve - I really like it and Mavis (realise I'm in the minority here)

Thea - gorgeous

Flora - really like but prefer Florence

MadMaryBoddington · 17/04/2018 10:39

Love Thea and Flora.

LoveInTokyo · 17/04/2018 10:43

Emmeline (NN Emmy) - love it
Olivia - like it
Maisie - a bit saccharine, doesn’t really work on a serious adult woman
Eve - nice but very popular
Libby - OK as a NN for Elizabeth, not on its own
Florence - like it
Charlotte - nice but safe choice
Alice - like it
Madeleine - like it
Maeve - like it
Thea - it’s alright
Flora - really like it
Tia - OK

MrsBonnie · 17/04/2018 16:20

Thank you for all of your responses! caterpillar that’s me off Alice now! Haha

Tokyo TIA means “thanks in advance”, but I guess it’s a name too haha!

Our surname is quite common... think Jones or Brown ... so perhaps one of the more uncommon of the common list? Hmm

Hopefully BFP in a few months and I can start to sort these out for reals! Star

LoveInTokyo · 17/04/2018 16:42

Haha! I thought it was a name on your list and you were just really excited about that one.

Grin
LoveInTokyo · 17/04/2018 16:44

I would pick Emmeline off that list (especially because of the suffragette link and the fact that 2018 is the centenary of the Representation of the People Act), but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s about to have a bit of a surge in popularity.

MrsNjie · 17/04/2018 16:55

Love Emmeline/Emmy :) and quite like Alice.

I have two boys:
Logan Samuel (10yrs)
Zayne Adam (8wks)

I like modern first names with traditional middle names. We couldn't agree on any other boys names for the baby though!!

starkid · 17/04/2018 17:03

From your list I like:

Emmeline
Charlotte
Alice
Eve
