Michelle
Lucy
Sophie
Kayleigh
Kelly
Gemma
Clare/Claire
Aiofe
Niamh
Siobhan (I went to a catholic school in a UK town with lots of Irish people)

Hayley
Katie
Lisa
Amy
Jennifer / Jenny
Jade
Rachel
Sarah
Victoria / Vicki / vicky ect
Elizabeth/ Lizzie
Charlene
Fiona / irish spellings of very similar names
Danielle
Kimberley (not really at school more ther were loads at university)
Emmas and Emilys (again, met loads my age at uni rather than school)
Leanne (and quite a few other Anne based names that weren’t Anne if that makes sense)

Liam (can’t think of a single William but about 12 Liam’s in my year and the ones around it)
Disciple/gospel names like Joseph, Mark, Luke, Peter...
Micheal
Kieran / Kier
Mark
Darren
Daniel

Ashley was also a common unisex one.

Laid out like this the Irish/Catholic influence seems really obvious...

CremeEggThief · 19/04/2018 17:13

I started school in 1982 and I went to an all-girls school in Ireland. Lisa was the most common name in my year: 4 out of an intake of 75. It was also the most common name in my sister's year, 3 years below mine.

Other popular names in my school and the other girls' secondary were Michelle, Joanne, Karen, Laura, Olivia, Caroline, Catherine, Gemma, Nicola, Lorraine, Aisling, Niamh, Sinéad, Orla and Fiona.

There were still quite a few old fashioned names around; such as Yvonne, Gillian, Gwen, Marian, Susan, Janet, Geraldine, Joyce, Maureen, Paula, Carol and Deborah.

Mary was definitely the most popular middle name.

greendale17 · 19/04/2018 17:16
