Really struggling with names!

Hi all, please help. Baby due any day. Unknown gender. Husband and I still can't agree on names. Surname begins with T so first name can't end with T. Family names already used include Amy, Isabella, Annie, Poppy, Emma, Jasper and Alice so can't go with any of those.

Current shortlist - Girls: Mabel, Lois, Tessa, Diana, Maggie/Marjory, Alondra (husband hates this one), Daisy (husband's favourite), Gabriella, Olive

Boys: Frank/Franklin, Stanley, Donald (husband dislikes), Samuel, Edison, Barnaby, Louis

How about Elsie? For a girl
Oliver/Olly for a boy

rosegarden45 · 02/04/2018 17:14

To add to this: bump has been called Frank for months. Not sure where it came from and we genuinely don't know if it's a boy or girl. I'm just not 100% sure if going for Frank in real life is what we want. Also, I like Franklin but a school friend has recently named her baby that and I don't want her to think I've stolen her name! Not that I ever see her as she lives miles away

There are a lot of Oliver's in the area we live and also know an Elsie already so wouldn't go for that but it is really pretty

I particularly like Marjory/Marjorie and I also like Diana. Marjory is such an old name and it's definitely due a comeback. I quite like Maggie if you went with Margaret as an official name. I've never heard of Alondra. I don't dislike it, though.
I really like Donald, too, and Samuel, Barnaby and Louis from your boys' list.

parrotonmyshoulder · 02/04/2018 17:23

Diana. Pick Diana. It’s lovely. I like a Margaret as well. How about Francesca so you can use Frankie?

RavenWings · 02/04/2018 17:31

Girls:
Mabel - really dislike this
Lois - I like it
Tessa - dont mind it but not sure about it with a surname beginning with T.
Diana - love it, beautiful name
Maggie/Marjory - meh
Alondra - no opinion on it one way or another but as your husband doesn't like it I consider it out of the running
Daisy - nah
Gabriella - pretty
Olive - it's ok

Boys: Frank/Franklin - I like it
Stanley - nope
Donald = Trump to me, no.
Samuel - nope, overdone
Edison - meh
Barnaby - no
Louis - ok

I'd probably use Diana or Lois for a girl, Frank for a boy.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 02/04/2018 17:39

Diana is fab.
Marjorie is awful, sorry.
Tessa is nice
Love Mabel and Daisy.
Don't like Alondra.

Donald just screams Trump.
Don't like Stanley.
Edison is too try hard.
Barnaby. Is likely to become Barney.
Louie is okay.
Don't like Samuel.

MyUnicornMadeMeDoIt · 02/04/2018 17:43

What about Penelope (or Penny for short) for a girl and Jasper for a boy?

rosegarden45 · 02/04/2018 17:44

Thanks for your thoughts so far. Donald was my grandfather's name so that's why I like it but I agree that unfortunately Trump has made it not so great. I'm just hopeful that he won't be in the news forever therefore the name could last. I also like Gladys as this was grandmother's name but not sure if that is just far too old lady.

rosegarden45 · 02/04/2018 17:46

We both like Penelope so could add that to the list. Already have a Jasper in the family so can't go with that one unfortunately

daisypond · 02/04/2018 17:50

Hm, I do like Donald, but I admit Donald Trump hadn't actually occurred to me! I was thinking, "nice old Scottish name". Gladys would be very unusual these days, a step too far for my taste. I think Nurse Gladys Emmanuel from Open All Hours or Gladys from Hi-De-Hi... It's related to Claudia, I've read. Is that a possibility?

userabcname · 02/04/2018 17:54

I really like Gabriella and Penelope - lovely names (Penelope was on our shortlist for girls but we had a boy). For boys I love Barnaby from your list. I personally wouldn't go for Samuel as there are so many Sams.

AdaColeman · 02/04/2018 17:55

Gabriella is my favourite from your list, and also quite like Daisy.

I agree with your DH about Alondra. Is she the heroine of a favourite book?

Louis is my favourite, and also like Barnaby.

daisypond · 02/04/2018 17:56

Is Samuel/Sam really that common? I don't know a single one - from baby to grown-up!

chezmk1988 · 02/04/2018 17:57

Girls I like Lois and Gabriella and boys Frank, Stanley and samuel

rosegarden45 · 02/04/2018 18:06

Alondra is a Spanish origin name meaning lark and has musical relation. I have Spanish heritage and am a music teacher therefore thought it might be a nice name that is a bit different to the usual musical names such as Harmony/Melody which I really dislike. I think the reason husband doesn't like it is because he has never heard it. To me that is a positive because I don't want baby to have the same name as other kids but then I don't want it to be too odd and for the kid to dislike their name forever

OP posts:
MikeUniformMike · 02/04/2018 18:11

Frankie.
Frances if a girl, or Francesca, with Alondra as a middle name.
Francis if a boy. Middle name Donald.

Sorted.

AdaColeman · 02/04/2018 18:19

How about Allegra instead of Alondra? I like the previous suggestion of Francesca too.

MikeUniformMike · 02/04/2018 18:29

I 'm not keen on Alondra but like Allegra a lot.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 02/04/2018 18:35

Franklin Louis (Frankie).
Tessa Daisy.

HomeEdHopefuls · 02/04/2018 18:48

Tempany for a girl Smile

bridgetreilly · 02/04/2018 19:02

In order of preference:
Lois
Mabel
Daisy
Maggie
Tessa
Olive
Diana
Marjory
Gabriella
Alondra (sorry, but not only do I not like it, I really don't think you can choose a name your DH hates).

Barnaby
Samuel
Frank (but not Franklin)
Donald
Louis
Edison

NameyMcChangeRae · 02/04/2018 19:05

For a boy:
Henry
James
Alexander

For a girl
Olivia
Sofia
Margot

WhereIsBlueRabbit · 02/04/2018 19:09

My favourites of your names are Gabriella, Daisy and Mabel from the girls' list and Samuek, Louis and Barnaby from the boys' list.

I love Tessa but am not a fan of alliterative names, and I'm not keen on Franklin - I prefer Francis.

Alondra is rather nice but I'd probably go for it as a middle name rather than a first name, personally - it's so unusual in this country - and I do think you both need to love the name.

AnyaMoondial · 02/04/2018 19:31

Daisy and Tessa are both really lovely.

Samuel is my favourite from your boy list.
