Any opinions or preferences on the following boys names? Do you know many little boys with these names?

We like traditional names with a religious link. We've had to rule out quite a few already as friends have beat us to them, so we've narrowed our list down to the following..

Christopher
Jonathan or
James (although this is also the name of DH's cousin so wondering if too close to use?)

Think we're agreed on Andrew for a middle name...

I love Christopher.
James is fab. Yes its popular but it's also not faddy.
Not a fan of Johnathan, sorry
Andrew is gorgeous as a MN. Although would you not consider it as a first name.
Other suggestions.
Thomas. Alexander. Peter. William.

Hellywelly10 · 31/03/2018 23:10

I think its safe to still use james.

RainbowdropsandUnicorns · 31/03/2018 23:12

I like the name James and used it as a middle name. I wouldn't use it as a first name, over Christopher or Jonathan, though. This is due to its popularity.

Christopher and Jonathan are both great in my opinion. Think I slightly favour Jonathan though. Andrew is lovely, really lovely. It's a great choice of middle name.

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 31/03/2018 23:14

All lovely names. I think Christopher and Jonathan go best with Andrew (and are also more uncommon than James atm), and Jonathan is my favourite of the two.

C0untDucku1a · 31/03/2018 23:15

I know a baby james. Dont know a Jonathan under the age of 12. And nkt many at a actually. Whereas i know a lot of james’!

Christopher ahain seems very 70s to me but all your name choices seem 70s.

What about Paul? There are simply not enough baby Pauls.

Doilooklikeatourist · 31/03/2018 23:15

James is fine to use ( family name ? Not a problem ) and it’s a lovely name
I don’t know any Christopher’s

A couple of Jonathon ( though one is a serial shagger in his fifties [shudders] )
All good choices

chezmk1988 · 31/03/2018 23:16

I have a James and yes it is very popular. I wouldn't change his name for the world though and I love I can call him Jimmy.
I like Christopher and Jonathan too. Little kit and Johnny.

ineedamoreadultieradult · 31/03/2018 23:20

Christopher makes my teeth itch I have no idea why.
James is very normal especially when paired with Andrew.
I would go for Jonathan it's not that popular these days and has a few options for shortening.

RapunzelIsHere · 31/03/2018 23:38

Hate Jonathan.
Love James.
Christopher is okay.

Sophronia · 01/04/2018 03:33

Jonathan is great and very underused nowadays

YerAuntFanny · 01/04/2018 04:01

All 3 are fine, my favourite is James.

I know a few little James' and Christopher's but I couldn't tell you the last time I met a Jonathon!

MyNameIsAlexDrake · 01/04/2018 04:06

Nathan? Still classic and biblical but not too popular

Cirrys · 01/04/2018 05:26

Christopher would be my choice. I like both Chris and Topher as nicknames. The nicknames for James and Jonathan aren't as nice imo.

Cirrys · 01/04/2018 05:36

Have your friends really beaten you to every other traditional religious name? Patrick, Cuthbert, Dominic, Francis, Jerome, Gabriel, Joseph, Matthew, Simon, Peter, Thomas?

TheDowagerCuntess · 01/04/2018 05:55

Agree with Cirrys that there are quite a few other names which should surely be in the running.

Christopher - I mean, no-one is ever going to call him Christopher, are they? And Chris is just so yawn-some.

James is fine.

Jonathan is good - lots of nickname potential, and just basic Jon is cool.

But yes, there are lots of other options to add to the mix, I'd've thought.

greendale17 · 01/04/2018 06:13

Hate Jonathon

greendale17 · 01/04/2018 06:14

and just basic Jon is cool.

^No, it really is not. Jon is bland and boring

lovesugarfreejelly63 · 01/04/2018 06:25

How about Noah, Malachi, Boaz, Jacob, Samuel, Tiras, or Elisha, all very biblical. Tiras Andrew Mocha has got a nice ring about it.

RoryHatesCoffee · 01/04/2018 06:31

They're all just very bland, especially James.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 01/04/2018 06:38

💙 Jonathan and James.
Dislike Christopher.

stellinaa · 01/04/2018 06:42

Chris and James are so common. If you are set on one of these three names, I would say to go with Jonathan, not as prevalent amongst kids nowadays, and Johnny is a cute nickname.

Although, I for sure agree with Cirrys too, surely there are some more options that your friends have not already named their kids? Samuel, Nathaniel, Jesse, Zachary, Luke, Ethan, Jonah, Jeremiah, etc?

SuperBeagle · 01/04/2018 06:48

I love Christopher and James.

I'm not a fan of Jonathan, but do like just John.

Christopher is not popular at all at the moment. I don't know any younger than mid-20s. Looking at the stats for where I live (Australia) confirms what I thought, because it wasn't in the top 100 in 2016. It last ranked in 2014.

I love James too, but it is very popular. Consistently popular, however, so it's not "trendy" or "faddy". It's been in the top 15 since at least 2000 here.

So, on the balance, I'd choose Christopher Andrew. But it depends also on how you feel about Christopher being shortened. If you don't want it to be shortened, you might be best to go with James.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 01/04/2018 06:55

All lovely names. James is my favourite of the three. I have no idea what makes these names bland in the eyes of some, but then I've never understood the urge to give a child an unusual name just so hardly anyone else will share it. The important things to me were that everybody should be able to spell it and pronounce it without a lot of tiresome discussion. I also love names which have been so popular over many centuries that there are plenty of famous people with that name. (Not celebrities - people famous for their achievements.)

NotAgainYoda · 01/04/2018 07:19

Nice names

I prefer John to Jonathan, and John would be my favourite, followed by James/Jamie.

Christopher is my least favourite

What about:

Michael
David
Patrick
Nicholas

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 01/04/2018 07:23

Jonathan is lovely.

What about Christopher shortened to Kit?
