Do you see Fred as a stand alone name? It seems a bit incomplete somehow but I don’t know if I’m overthinking it. Don’t really like Fredrick.

Wilfred?

I do think “Fred” alone needs a fuller name to fall back on.

OhHolyJesus · 24/03/2018 19:08

Fred to me on its own is fine.

BabloHoney · 24/03/2018 19:19

Could also be short for Alfred if you want a longer version, I think Fred and Freddie are popular as standalone names though.

Aprilmightmemynewname · 24/03/2018 19:21

We have a Freddie. Really suits him!!

bobstersmum · 24/03/2018 19:25

I've got a Fred! He's just Fred, well he's started off as Freddie but we only ever call him Fred. He really suits it.

NotTodayBillyRay · 24/03/2018 19:31

Same as @bobstersmum

We have Freddie but since he started junior school he's wanted to be known as Fred.

TempusFugitive · 24/03/2018 19:32

I prefer frederick

MyOtherProfile · 24/03/2018 19:34

There are two at my dc school and they are both just Fred but usually called Freddie.

ReversingSnail · 24/03/2018 19:36

I'm a bit old fashioned so prefer it as nickname for a longer name. If you're not keen on Frederick, how about Alfred?

DarkRoomDarren · 24/03/2018 19:52

I know a Fred in his mid-thirties, who is just Fred. I’m not all that keen, but it’s worked fine for him!

I do like Frederick and LOVE Wilfred. I know two baby Fredericks, (Freddie and Fred), and one baby Freddie, (just Freddie on BC), so I think it’s a bit of a trendy name atm, if that sways you either way.

My DGF was Fred, short for Frederick. I love the name Fred but sadly couldn’t use it with our family name Sad

Stickerrocks · 25/03/2018 20:15

My DD has been called Fred rather than Catherine for 14 of the last 16 years. I have no idea why! I probably wouldn't bother putting Catherine on your DS's birth certificate though!

twelveangels · 25/03/2018 20:26

Love Fred, it's fine on its own.

Love this, goes to prove that you nicknames evolve of their own accord, no matter how much the parents say “we’ll name her Louisa but she’ll be known as Lulu”. I know an Isabel known as Derek!

mnahmnah · 25/03/2018 20:36

We have a Frederick. Who we intended to call Freddie. And actually always call Fred! We like that he had options. I never loved Frederick, I just wanted him to have a more formal full name. But actually it’s really grown on me since and now we use Frederick in a jokey, fun way.

Stickerrocks · 27/03/2018 20:12

TBH I've had a teddy called Fred the Ted for over 40 years. It probably stems from that - it made the whole baby thing easier to cope with I if I treated her like a bear!
