Agnes- too old ladyish?

DH and I tend to go for more old fashioned names, others we're considering are
Martha
June
Ivy
Nancy

DH has suggested Agnes because it was the name of a relative who was very dear to him and I'd like to honour that but wondering if it's just too old fashioned?

Why not go for a variant - Ines, Inez, Annes/Annis?

Fuffalo · 24/03/2018 14:48

Think it's really awful, but I'm not a fan of the granny and grandad names that are everywhere at the moment. It's not as bad as Enid though which I noticed was on another thread. So, 'not as bad as Enid' is enthusiastic as I can get.

Fuffalo · 24/03/2018 14:49

And yes, agree with others about Ivy. I know so many little girls called Ivy all of a sudden!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 24/03/2018 15:07

I know a little Agatha (nn Aggie). She's adorable and thankfully doesn't mind that I keep calling her Taggie.

CallieAllie · 24/03/2018 19:28

My grandma is Agnes and I can't imagine anyone under the age of 70 being called that!

Oblomov18 · 24/03/2018 19:32

It's awful.
Do not think your dd would thank you for it.

vampirina · 24/03/2018 19:33

I love Ivy from your list.

windchimesabotage · 24/03/2018 19:35

Of my gosh I LOVE Agnes.
I really like Ivy and Martha as well.
But I love Agnes to the extent that im quite jealous you might be using it. My husband didnt like it so it got crossed off our list :-(

windchimesabotage · 24/03/2018 19:39

He also wont countenance Myrtle, Beryl or Enid......... all amazing old school names.
I really think these are coming back big time now so I seriously doubt your child will get teased as these will all be quite popular names. Look at the resurgence of Ivy, Ethel and Violet! All top 100 names last year.

SENSIBLE BLOKE.

Fluffypurpleslipper · 24/03/2018 20:58

Agnes great.

unintentionalthreadkiller · 24/03/2018 21:06

I know a little one and think it's lovely.

17caterpillars1mouse · 24/03/2018 21:22

Agnes is lovely. My favourite of your choices. She could go by Aggie, Nessie or as a child

I like Martha but know 3 and I like Ivy (know two). Not a fan of June or Nancy.

GlennRheeismyfavourite · 24/03/2018 21:40

Really like the French pronunciation- 'Anyess' - of Agnes - I'd go fir that!

Pemba · 25/03/2018 05:27

Agree that Agnes is probably a popular baby name with hipsters, but like pps said, the British pronunciation is very harsh. It's that 'ag' sound - and that's why I also dislike Agatha and Morag.

Gacapa · 27/03/2018 00:04

What about Jeanne?

clary · 27/03/2018 00:17

I love it and it was DS2's girl name IYSWIM.

But sorry Op everyone I tell dislikes it :( (one colleague actually said "good thing he was a boy" - rude!) so maybe I would have gone for Florence (the middle name). Even on here it's got a lot of dislikes, which is unusual on MN unless the name is proper made up and daft.

Other names I like: Mabel, Constance, Cecilia, Edith, Martha.

MrsDilber · 27/03/2018 00:35

I love Agnes.

Kittykatmacbill · 27/03/2018 08:13

Love Agnes, it’s not old ladyish it’s nearly rediscovered little girls name, that is a great strong grown ups name (definitely pass the can you be a high court judge test.).

Also it’s a family name great reason to call her that.

tortelliniforever · 27/03/2018 08:18

Agnes is a lovely name. I love the Italian version (Agnese) too and wanted it for DD but a close friend got there first.

poochuspoochus · 27/03/2018 08:48

I like Agnes it's sweet. Nancy is actually quite a common nickname/diminutive of Agnes so that would also honour your husbands relative perhaps.
