Agnes- too old ladyish?

DH and I tend to go for more old fashioned names, others we're considering are
Martha
June
Ivy
Nancy

DH has suggested Agnes because it was the name of a relative who was very dear to him and I'd like to honour that but wondering if it's just too old fashioned?

Thank you all.

I was very much on the fence about it and DH is, by his own admission, unable to be objective because it was his late Mum's name. He's not trying to force the issue and is very open to other suggestions.
I think I'm going to take it off the list but maybe keep it in mind for a middle name.

I know a 5 year old called Agnes. I have to say that, for my money, it truly is an ugly, harsh-sounding name. I picture an old crone with a hooked nose!

LuluBellaBlue · 23/03/2018 18:14

I love Agnes! A similar sound is Alba?

nonevernotever · 23/03/2018 18:15

To me agnes is associated with witches/witchcraft. I'm not 100%sure why, but I seem to remember someone telling me that when I was young. I don't like senga either (and can't think of any other name where it's normal to spell the name backwards as an alternative version) I do like old fashioned names like molly, marjorie, polly etc though

bassackwards · 23/03/2018 18:16

We were quite close to choosing Agnes for our DD as it's a family name and we love 'Aggie'.... but Agnes itself just didn't sit right with me.

BangingOn · 23/03/2018 18:17

I love Aggie but struggle with Agnes.

Movablefeast · 23/03/2018 18:20

I think Agnes is a lovely name. Unfortunately we know a very bossy 14 yr old Agnes who is very unpopular (as is her mum for same reason) so it has kind of killed the beauty of the name for me.....

AthenaAshton · 23/03/2018 18:21

Love Agnes!

Scabetty · 23/03/2018 18:22

No awful.

Colette · 23/03/2018 18:31

Nancy is a nickname for Agnes.

ErrrrrNo · 23/03/2018 18:31

There are two in my 4 year olds class, all get called Aggie.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 23/03/2018 18:35

Love Nancy, but do like Agnes and Martha.

Juells · 23/03/2018 18:41

When I started college I spent the first six months in a hostel run by French nuns and I loved the way they pronounced Agnes... sort of Annyezzz. It means lamb if that's any help Grin

ReversingSnail · 23/03/2018 18:45

any other name where it's normal to spell the name backwards as an alternative

Not my taste but some have used Nevaeh.

stiffstink · 23/03/2018 18:51

I was going to suggest Ines (with an accent somewhere) but Esme and Ines are too essssssy together (each is gorgeous). Esssssy- that’s a new word for you all to enjoy.... you’re welcome.

Vangoghsear · 23/03/2018 18:54

I could not imagine ever calling a baby Agnes. It was my GM's name and even she didn't like it. I've never understood the notion of calling a baby after or in honour of a relative anyway, the child is his/her own person not a reminder of some relative of the parents.

TroysMammy · 23/03/2018 18:56

I always think of Agnes Brown, Mrs Brown's Boys. I much prefer Agatha.

childmindingmumof3 · 23/03/2018 18:56

I find Agnes quite an ugly name but I think it's quite trendy.
Nancy Agnes or Martha Agnes maybe?

Figgygal · 23/03/2018 18:56

It was one of our girls names I love it

Knittedfairies · 23/03/2018 19:00

If it helps, the mediaeval pronunciation was ‘Annis’.

DarkBlueEyes · 23/03/2018 19:04

It's so subjective, isn't it? You'd probably hate my girls' names, but as you asked.... no. None of them. Just do not like. Agatha and Agnes make me think of servants names. How about Iris? Elise? Eliza? Or go with Elizabeth and shorten it to Eliza.

VerbenaGirl · 23/03/2018 19:11

I really like it. 👍

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 23/03/2018 19:16

Awful. Aggie is particularly bad.

Nancy is nice.

villainousbroodmare · 23/03/2018 19:20

Annis is nice... and Inez is lovely.

HonkyWonkWoman · 23/03/2018 19:22

Do not like Agnes at all . .
