Agnes- too old ladyish?

DH and I tend to go for more old fashioned names, others we're considering are
Martha
June
Ivy
Nancy

DH has suggested Agnes because it was the name of a relative who was very dear to him and I'd like to honour that but wondering if it's just too old fashioned?

I bloody love it OP! Agnes Ida

MerryMarigold · 23/03/2018 19:27

I like Agnes. Probably because I know a wonderful Agnes. I don't generally like old lady names. I only like Nancy on your list.

Lightsong · 23/03/2018 19:32

I love Agnes. Agnes is the pig-witch in Terry Pratchetts Discworld. Doesn't sound very cool, but she is 😀

IVflytrap · 23/03/2018 19:47

I find the sound of Agnes a bit harsh and prefer the French pronunciation (ahn-yes). I wish that was an accepted alternative in the UK.

Other have mentioned Annis and Ines/Inez as variations. There's also the southern French Anaïs (pronounced Ana-eese). I was told by a French speaker that it was a version of Agnes, although I've just checked and the top two results on google seem to think it's a version of Anna.

Aye, Senga. Martha is lovely.

SuperBeagle · 23/03/2018 19:51

Don't like it at all. It's worse than Agatha, which is the name I wanted to use for an English bulldog for a long time, which about sums up my feelings on the usability of the name.

StorminaBcup · 23/03/2018 19:54

I love Agnes! I think it’s a really sweet name. There’s an Agnes in the Despicable Me franchises.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 23/03/2018 20:35

I like Agnes but Nancy is the perfect name, in my view, I just love it.

Sophronia · 23/03/2018 20:42

Love the name Agnes!

Midnightpony · 23/03/2018 20:46

Oh god I usually say nothing on these threads but Agnes is the worst name ever in my opinion. It's jaggy and harsh and conjures up old moany women in hair curlers

pepperpop · 23/03/2018 20:47

Really not keen on Agnes but I like the rest of your list, especially Ivy.

LilaTheLion · 23/03/2018 20:47

I know a 30ish Agnes and she is cool as, and very very lovely. Do it.

Whatififall · 23/03/2018 20:51

I like Agnes. Makes me think of Agnes Deyn (who’s real name was something boring like Laura) and Agnes from the Despicable Me movies who was cute.

Mayhemmumma · 23/03/2018 20:55

I love June!!

Agnes is a bit harsh for calling across a playground etc. I know an agnesa which is cute.

MadMaryBoddington · 24/03/2018 07:29

Love it.

Ivy is so popular it’s a bit ‘done’ to me.

CanIGoToBedNow · 24/03/2018 07:49

Love Agnes - and I’ve got a Nancy! If I had another DC then Agnes would be right at the top of the list.

Belindabauer · 24/03/2018 07:50

It was my grandma's name so I'm biased.
I was going to use it for dd1 as a middle name until my ex fil stuck his oar in.

TatianaLarina · 24/03/2018 09:12

I like the French Agnès with a soft g, but not the English version.

Much much prefer Nancy.

YoucancallmeVal · 24/03/2018 09:46

Lovely in French, bloody awful in English. I love Martha and Nancy off your lost. You trip over ivys in the street here, every third family seems to have one.

DustyMaiden · 24/03/2018 09:51

It was my DMs name, she hated it.

I do think it depends what you associate it with so despicable me Agnes is much cuter.

Puremince · 24/03/2018 09:59

It was on our shortlist, and DD is very glad we didn't use it. But the old lady chic is more of a thing now than it was when we were naming DD, so I'd say yes.

childmindingmumof3 · 24/03/2018 10:42

Agree about Ivy suddenly being super popular, there are two at toddler group - Beyonce effect maybe?
