Adeline

I know an English aristo called Adelaide nn Addy so I don’t think it’s too Aus. Plus it makes me think of Adelaide in Guys and Dolls.

I’d suggest Adele if she wasn’t a lik rly famous popstar.

I like Adelaide! The city was named after a person, so it wasn't originally Australian.

Wasn't Adelaide in Aus named after Queen Adelaide, wife of King William (IV? The one before Victoria).

I think it is nice. old fashioned without being trendy. I think it is from the same root as Alice - means nobel.

I have a friend who has just named her baby this. My initial reaction was hmmm, not sure, but 20 mins later I loved it!

Heatherbell1978 · 14/03/2018 21:36

My best friend passed away a few years ago and this was her baby name if she was to have a girl, which she didn't. I decided to call my daughter Heidi which is the shortened version of Adelaide.

Kokeshi123 · 15/03/2018 12:29

It's a beautiful name. Adele is nice too.

I love love love Adelaide. It’s in my list. I had the ‘Australian’ chat with my OH and after a brief history lesson he got it 😏
I actually first saw this name when I was pg with dd when walking home through a very beautiful and old graveyard..., on a grave. Maybe a little strange for name inspiration but the turn of the century names are by far my favourite.
Classic and beautiful.

harrietm87 · 15/03/2018 22:15

The German pronunciation (think it's German origin?) is adel-eye-eeda, which I think is much nicer than adel-aid (pronounced like the Australian place). Would that be an option to avoid the Australian connection?

She'd be correcting people for the rest of her life though (unless she lives in Germany). I think the name may be French in origin (although I agree it looks and sounds German)

I love Adelaide! Beautiful name, keep trying to talk your DP round in my opinion. Other suggestions:

Emmeline
Ada
Ida
Madeline
Heidi

HuskyMcClusky · 16/03/2018 14:12

Adelaide is beautiful. My friend has one, and we live in Aus!

Anyway, it was a person’s name before it was the city in South Australia, so I wouldn’t let that put you off.

HeyMicky · 16/03/2018 14:22

I like it.
I know an Adeline which is nice. Pronounced adel-een though I guess some might say it Adel-ine (to rhyme with wine)

kinorsam · 16/03/2018 14:26

Queen Victoria's eldest daughter was Victoria Adelaide Mary Louise.

I like Adelaide, it was my grandma's name.

battenbergbutterfly · 16/03/2018 14:27

Ada and Heidi are beautiful names too

TheChippendenSpook · 16/03/2018 14:28

I like it Smile

daisypond · 16/03/2018 15:47

You could use Adelheid, the original German spelling, from which Heidi comes.

sexnotgender · 16/03/2018 22:52

Addison
