We’ve recently found out we’re having a girl and have really struggled to agree on any girls names. We want something pretty, not too common but also not weird. We’ve come across the name Ottilie and love it. Just wondered what people think of it? And if anyone knows any Ottilies?

I'm honestly not sure if I like it or not. I don't know any Ottilies but feel it's one of those names which looks difficult but is actually beautiful when in use.

Sorry, that probably doesn't help Blush

bridgetreilly · 06/03/2018 17:58

I really like it. You could also consider Ottiline.

TroubledLitchen · 06/03/2018 18:01

It’s DD’s middle name so I’m totally biased but love it. I wanted it for a first name but DH wasn’t brave enough (his French family were rather confused by it) so we compromised on middle name! I’ve never met another.

DramaAlpaca · 06/03/2018 18:02

It looks pretty written down, but I'm not sure about it when it's said aloud. In some accents it wouldn't sound nice at all. And it makes me think of the word utterly and of otters... Sorry, I'm not really a fan. I've never met one, btw.

17caterpillars1mouse · 06/03/2018 18:05

I like it though prefer Ottoline. There is also Ottilia

I know if 1 Ottilie

flissfloss65 · 06/03/2018 18:05

I like it but think it will probably be shortened to Tilly, which is nice.

Littlemum2be86 · 06/03/2018 18:12

We were thinking it could be shortened to Lottie as well which would be cute. I realise it doesn’t sound nice if you don’t pronounce the t’s but otherwise I think it’s really pretty. I just worry if it’s too out there!

I go to a playgroup in a small village and there are two Ottilies there who are under 2. The mothers look at each other like this Angry.

I think it's a nice name. I follow someone on Instagram with an Otelia which is similar.

LadyPug · 06/03/2018 20:16

I know one and I think it’s beautiful and not too out there at all! Go for it!

MikeUniformMike · 06/03/2018 20:18

I'm not keen but if you love it, use it.

Whisperquietly · 06/03/2018 20:18

There are three Ottilies at DS’s school. The one in DS’ year is a really lovely child, so I like the name!

SuperBeagle · 06/03/2018 20:19

Where I live, it would be pronounced "odd-uh-lee", which is pretty awful. Then you have to contend with people who don't pronounce the ts at all.

I don't like it.

Also, I think the majority of people would assume Lottie was short for Charlotte.

daisypond · 06/03/2018 20:23

I'm not really keen, but it's OK. It makes me think of otters - otterly.

MammieBear · 06/03/2018 20:25

Lovely name choice

I like it but that's because I know a lovely girl -she's 12/13 - called Ottilie. I'd never heard of it prior to meeting her. Congratulations OP Flowers

Enidblyton1 · 06/03/2018 20:46

I would call her Charlotte if you want to call her Lottie. Ottilie shortens naturally to Ottie or Tillie.

BrutusMcDogface · 06/03/2018 20:49

Nope, not a fan at all I'm afraid. But if you like it turn use it!

MikeUniformMike · 06/03/2018 20:49

Ottilie butterly.
Otterly
Charlotte nn Lottie is nicer

helpmum2003 · 06/03/2018 20:50

Very pretty name. Agree Tilly or Ottie best nick names......

Lottie is Charlotte or Carlotta and others I can't remember! !

Littlemum2be86 · 06/03/2018 21:27

Thanks for all the input! I love Ottie or Tilly for a nn too. Any other name suggestions in the pretty, uncommon but not weird category please send them my way!

I wanted to use it for DD, but sodding XH wanted something more unusual. Angry

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 06/03/2018 21:35

How are people pronouncing it?
In German it's pronounced Ott-il-i-a, stress on second syllable.

Tbh the love for it on MN and seemingly in RL baffles me. It's not been included at all, at least AFAIK, in the German craze for old lady chic, which one might have thought it would, seeing as it's made it over here.

BlackType · 06/03/2018 21:37

I'm pronouncing it in the German way, as I lived there for f knows how long. It's a gorgeous name, and I like the Goethe associations. DD would still have it as her name, had XH not wanted something less popular. The bugger.
