Hugo...or Ernest, Vincent, Frederick?

Baby due in a few weeks and having a last-minute name crisis - help! Last name is Spencer and we already have a Theodore...there are hardly any names we both like:

Edward: 2 Teds, ridiculous
Edmund: again 2 Teds and what if DS isn't poetic Grin
Vincent: like the full version but not the nicknames and even I'd end up saying Vincey, etc for a little one
Ernest: DH nearly had me convinced but more likely to think Morecambe and Wise/Sesame Street than Shackleton
Frederick: already a distant family member of the same generation with the name, plus maybe too many Freddies in general (though I'm not too bothered if a name is popular)

That leaves us with Hugo! Husband is posh, me not so much. I initially declared it a 'GP name' along with Piers, Guy etc Grin but really like it phonetically and like the meaning. It's a family name on husband's side also, and not uncommon as a current baby name so DS unlikely to be teased (no.1 concern for me in choosing a name). I'm definitely coming around to it...the only issue is the Hugh Despencer thing but not sure many people (kids) will know his story.

Any thoughts? And ideas on middle names?

I love Hugo and to me it is always a quirky rather than posh name. You could have a Hugo Edward?

Periclymenum · 06/03/2018 07:35

Oo that sounds lovely - will suggest to husband Smile

I like Hugo! And Frederick actually - I don't know many young Freddies so may not be as popular as you think?

Rockandrollwithit · 06/03/2018 07:39

I have a Hugo. It's a lovely name 🙂

Ernest Spencer and Vincent Spencer are quite S heavy and tonguetwistery.

Personally I'm not keen on Hugo but it does go well with your surname. I haven't heard of Hugh Despencer.

I think Frederick Spencer sounds great. I only know of 2 small Freddies (who live miles apart). It's a classic name and doesn't sound faddish.

Henry, Nathaniel, Albert, Julian, William would also go well with your surname IMHO.

deptfordgirl · 06/03/2018 07:51

I'm not keen on Hugo personally but love Frederick, Ernest and Vincent. I know a little Ernest who's known as Ernie.

pipilangstrumpf · 06/03/2018 08:12

I don't like Hugo much, but love Vincent.

Askance · 06/03/2018 08:14

Hugo Spencer is a lovely combination!

SuperBeagle · 06/03/2018 08:22

I have a Frederick, and I may be biased, but it's a great name. Grin

ChocolateCrunch · 06/03/2018 09:12

Love Frederick/Freddie - only know 1, aged 7. I quite like Hugo. What about Hugh?

TheDailyMailIsADisgustingRag · 06/03/2018 09:44

Hugo is just lovely and not a ‘posh name’ anymore imo. It’s used by all sorts of people where we live.

stellarfox · 06/03/2018 10:05

I do think of Hugo as quite middle class but I don’t dislike it. I love Ernest and Frederick. What about Conrad, Rufus, Eric or Percy?

LoveProsecco · 06/03/2018 10:19

I think Hugo is the nicest on you lust and lovely with your surname.

Other suggestions you may have ruled out

William
Rufus
Henry
Benjamin
Harrison

MollyHuaCha · 06/03/2018 11:05

Hugo is nice

17caterpillars1mouse · 06/03/2018 11:06

Hugo is the only one on your list I like

Well I love Frederick but not keen on any of the nn especially Freddie

BillywigSting · 06/03/2018 11:15

Frederick is my dad's name so as much as I like it (and I really do like it a lot) I can't picture it on a baby.

Hugo Edward as suggested by pp is really lovely though

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 06/03/2018 11:43

Hugo goes very well with Theodore, but I like Frederic, without the 'k'.
Also like Ernest.

chezmk1988 · 06/03/2018 14:53

I don't like Hugo but it goes with your surname over the others so going on your list go for Hugo

fearfultrill · 06/03/2018 17:00

Absolutely love Hugo! And it goes lovely with your surname

Littlemum2be86 · 06/03/2018 17:29

I love Frederick! But Hugo is also lovely and I don’t think of it as posh if that’s your worry. Goes with your surname well too.

DramaAlpaca · 06/03/2018 17:35

As others have said, Hugo goes great with your surname.

SumAndSubstance · 08/03/2018 10:40

Hugo is nice! Also, I've been a teacher for quite a long time and I've honestly never heard kids teasing each other for their names. There are so many names about these days that there isn't really a 'normal' any more. I wouldn't worry about that.

fleshmarketclose · 08/03/2018 10:50

I prefer Vincent but think Hugo goes better with your surname.

AlbertaSimmons · 09/03/2018 13:42

I have a Frederick, so obviously love that. Also love both Hugo and Vincent .

LastNightsMakeUp · 09/03/2018 15:10

Oh Ernest Spencer would be a great name - really love it. A bit quirky but still classic and would age well with him
