Rory, Andrew or Heath : Boys names.... DH is Scottish but we live down south.

Andrew is DHs first choice as it’s a personal name... but I hate Andy and Drew and fear that the name will always be shortened.

I like Rory and Heath. Andrew is very.....meh

HundredMilesAnHour · 04/03/2018 09:04

Andrew is the nicest. Heath is ok but a bit trying too hard.

Rory is just awful (I've never met a nice Rory but I've met a few unpleasant ones).

People will always find a way to shorten names so don't waste time worrying about that.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 04/03/2018 09:07

I like them all, Rory is my favourite.

FeedtheTree · 04/03/2018 09:08

Rory, though I prefer the celtic spelling Ruaridh. It's a great name. On the shortlist for DC.

Unlike Hundred I've met a few dodgy Andrews in my time. Enough to put me off the name.

pilates · 04/03/2018 09:08

Only like Rory
Andrew would be ok for a middle name

INeedToEat · 04/03/2018 09:10

Andrew is a little boring but nice enough (love Drew as a nick name).

Really like Rory (and know some lovely ones 😁) and also like Heath.

SnackSnackEatAndCrave · 04/03/2018 09:14

I love Rory. It was on our shortlist for DD if she had been a boy.
Not sure why but I feel Heath is a bit too "try-hard". It's a nice name but makes my eyebrows go up for some reason.
Andrew is nice. But a bit dull if you only use the full name. I have a cousin called Andrew and he is exactly this, very lovely but a but boring!

PointlessUsername · 04/03/2018 09:28

Rory

FairfaxAikman · 04/03/2018 09:57

Rory or Andrew. Heath is too try hard.

I have a dog called Rory and a DS called Andrew.

AnyaMoondial · 04/03/2018 09:58

Oooo Heath! I know a lovely adult Heath. Rory is good too.

Andrew is a fine name but he will almost certainly end up being Andy eventually.

AiryFairy1991 · 04/03/2018 10:12

Ruaridh isn’t pronounced as Rory FeedtheTree Every ruaridh I’ve ever met has been pronounced “Roo-ree” rather than “Row-ree”.

Sophronia · 04/03/2018 10:24

Andrew

Argeles · 04/03/2018 10:33

Andrew is lovely.

I can understand your concerns over nicknames/shortened names, but I think that if you instill it in your son that his name is Andrew and this is how people must address him, then he will instruct them to call him Andrew.

I have a name that could be shortened, but my parents did the above with me, and I’ve been really forceful about it with anyone who dares to try and shorten it. It’s the same for my Mum too, and for my DH who has a name that a lot of people try to Anglacise.

I think it’s so rude and disrespectful when people mess with your name - it should only be on your day so, not because people are lazy, or think you should have an almost ‘pet name.’

I personally am not at all fond of Rory. Heath is better in my opinion, but I much prefer Andrew.

SparklyMagpie · 04/03/2018 10:39

My son is Rory :)

SparklyMagpie · 04/03/2018 10:40

And my Rory is ever so lovely, very happy, funny, kind caring little boy Grin

ChocolateCrunch · 04/03/2018 11:10

Andrew - classic name. I know two Andrews who are only known as their full name, not Andy or Drew. Quite like Rory, but not Heath, sorry.

MikeUniformMike · 04/03/2018 13:56

Andrew. It doesn't have to be shortened.
Rory is nice but awful if you can't say 'r'.
Heath is nice but makes me think of a former prime minister.

How about Stuart?

lynmilne65 · 04/03/2018 14:19

My ds is Andrew and is almost never shortened!
Except by me to Wol !!!

Tessermee · 04/03/2018 15:38

Love Rory
Heath is ok but a bit “trendy”
Really don’t like Andrew,

DramaAlpaca · 04/03/2018 15:47

Love Rory & Andrew.

Not so keen on Heath.

UsernameInvalid66 · 04/03/2018 16:00

I like Andrew best but I probably wouldn't use it if I didn't like any of the short forms. I like Rory too, but be warned - there's a Rory in my extended family and some people just call him Ror! Heath is not quite my thing, but not horrible.
