Elsie or Daphne

Me and DP have gone through every girls name suggested on MN in the last year I think and the final 2 are Elsie and Daphne.

We’d kind of decided on Elsie and then at he last minute I heard a lady in TV called Daphne and loved it and now I can’t decide! Elsie is my great grandmothers name but worried it’s a little twee?

I like Elle and Fi as nicknames

Elsie without a doubt

dannydyerismydad · 03/03/2018 10:09

Love Daphne. Elsie is getting very popular. Daphne is great.

HappyLollipop · 03/03/2018 10:10

Elsie

Minus4 · 03/03/2018 10:10

Both twee to me sorry. Elsie marginally better.

AnyaMoondial · 03/03/2018 10:14

I prefer Daphne, it's fantastic!

Elsie is nice too though.

ChocolateCrunch · 03/03/2018 10:20

Daphne, but I like Elsie too.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 03/03/2018 10:28

Elsie is terrible. Daphne is a tiny bit better.

Daphne, by miles - lovely classical name from the Greek myths. I know of a little Daphne, and I think you're just at the start of the new curve in names. I've never liked Elsie, and those Victorian/Edwardian names, especially if they've got a servant vibe about them, will go out of fashion from the mainstream in a few years, I think.

upsideup · 03/03/2018 10:31

I would say Elsie is much nicer, for the nn Fi I would for Sophia.

Icklepickle101 · 03/03/2018 10:32

Do you think Fi works as a nn?

I think you could have Fi as a nickname for Daphne. Or maybe Phenie? Or Laurel, if you're being creative, as that's it's meaning. You'd want to avoid Daffy, which isn't that pleasant to my ears.

BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy · 03/03/2018 10:42

Daphne! Lovely name and different too. Elsie not so keen on.

Love2dance · 03/03/2018 10:51

Daphne is a beautiful name (even if, as well as having the classical roots, it reminds me of Scooby Doo!), but also love your other option. My beloved late granny was Elsie Emily.

WhereIsBlueRabbit · 03/03/2018 10:52

Daphne!

Penguinsandpandas · 03/03/2018 10:54

Elsie.

LoveB · 03/03/2018 10:55

Elsie!

CorianderSnell · 03/03/2018 10:58

I just put them into Darkgreener out of interest and they are both on massive upward trends from 20 yrs ago, although Elsie is in top 50 and Daphne is down in the 500s so much rarer.

Neither is quite my thing but Daphne’s are beautiful plants at this time of year so I would like that association.

Delphi would shorten to Fi well.

DeadButDelicious · 03/03/2018 11:07

Daphne. Definitely Daphne.

Threeandabit · 03/03/2018 13:47

Daphne

pipilangstrumpf · 03/03/2018 14:07

Daphné

TheJoyOfSox · 03/03/2018 14:13

I love Elsie, it has a certain timeless charm. Daphne is a nice enough name, I’d not pull a face if someone told me they called their baby Daphne but it does remind me of Frasier and that god awful accent their housekeep had!
Sorry, hope I’ve not destroyed Daphne for you with that thought.

BingBunnyTheBrat · 03/03/2018 14:29

Daphne is super cute and is more unusual than Elsie

MikeUniformMike · 03/03/2018 14:38

Daphne. Both are nice but Elsie is getting v popular.
Elle and Fi are a bit odd choices of nn. Elsie would be Els, and Daphne would be Daph, but you can choose any nn.

Threeandabit · 03/03/2018 15:06

I would also suggest Delphine as an alternative.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 03/03/2018 15:12

Elsie is cute, but then I would name her Elizabeth or Elspeth. If you want to call her Elle, why not just call her Elle?

Daphne is also cute - more common than Elsie around here.

Both are twee and self consciously old-ladyish,, but that's very popular at the moment.
