Elsie or Daphne

Me and DP have gone through every girls name suggested on MN in the last year I think and the final 2 are Elsie and Daphne.

We’d kind of decided on Elsie and then at he last minute I heard a lady in TV called Daphne and loved it and now I can’t decide! Elsie is my great grandmothers name but worried it’s a little twee?

I like Elle and Fi as nicknames

Elsie is twee.

Daphne is utterly fabulous.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 03/03/2018 23:17

Daphne is cool. How about Thisbe? Similar heritage and unusual.

Icklepickle101 · 04/03/2018 08:25

Now I’m doubting my choices!

I knew Elsie was getting popular but I didn’t know it was in the thirties that puts me off.

My DS name is in the 100s where as my partners DD is in the top 5 (both previous relationships) so we have wildly different taste in names!

I love Penelope, Beatrice, Ophelia, Olive where as he likes Mia, Jessica, Amelia, Emma, Evie

Any other suggestions that we both might like?

Don’t think you can go wrong with a classic name like Emma. Personally I prefer those types of names to Elsie or Daphne. Also don’t mind Beatrice from your list and have never met one (teacher here!)

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 04/03/2018 09:01

Delphine is beautiful. (Delphie).

n0ne · 04/03/2018 09:04

I love them both but would go with Elsie in your case due to the family connection

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 04/03/2018 09:05

Agree, Emma is timeless, like Jessica too.

I like Elsie short for Elspeth. Emma is nice too.

I’m really not a fan of the more classic names, they are pretty just not my personal choice Smile

What was your great grandmothers given name? She wouldn't have been christened Elsie. Maybe there is another NN you could use,

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 04/03/2018 09:49

Thisbe? Grin ita frisbee with a lisp!

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 04/03/2018 09:50

Penelope and Beatrice are so much nicer than Elsie and Daphne.

Icklepickle101 · 04/03/2018 10:07

GG was christened Elsie

Will suggest Dulcie and Felicity to DP

From your list, Olive and Ophelia are probably the only 2 outside the 100s. Do you like Dorothy, Pearl, Norah, Maeve, Hazel or Agnes?

RainbowdropsandUnicorns · 04/03/2018 12:13

Ursula?

Icklepickle101 · 04/03/2018 12:24

DPs compromise has been Eliza which I quite like but still more popular than I’d choose. My middle name is Elizabeth so seems like a good compromise for now. Not keen on Elizabeth though!

OP posts:
daisypond · 04/03/2018 12:37

I like Eliza. Or you could go for Elise - same letters as Elsie, but in a different order, and in my opinion a much nicer name. Felicity is also very nice, and I don't mind Dulcie either, though I'm less keen.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 04/03/2018 14:24

greatduck Grin now you mention it! It was the name of my nan's friend, I always liked the story of Pyramus and Thisbe so associate it with good things.

LarkDescending · 04/03/2018 19:27

Eliza is fabulous! Felicity is nice too.

halesie · 04/03/2018 19:37

OP I know a Daphna, may be another nice alternative to consider?

Elsie was a name in our family too but I'd use it as a NN rather than formal name too.

lecossaise · 04/03/2018 19:40

Daphne makes me (and the rest of Scotland) think of Daphne Broon...
