Elsie or Daphne

Me and DP have gone through every girls name suggested on MN in the last year I think and the final 2 are Elsie and Daphne.

We’d kind of decided on Elsie and then at he last minute I heard a lady in TV called Daphne and loved it and now I can’t decide! Elsie is my great grandmothers name but worried it’s a little twee?

I like Elle and Fi as nicknames

I wouldn't agree that Elsie has a timeless charm. No-one (or very few) would have named their child that a generation ago, but you could say the same for Albert/Arthur/Stanley and they are all popular now. But I think we've probably reached the very last round of great-grandparent names now, so I'd go with Daphne. It's less tied to one particular generation.

Hebe could be an option, if you'd like an alternative.

RavenWings · 03/03/2018 15:30

I agree that both are very twee, but I'd choose Daphne of the two. Bit less infantilising and old ladyish (odd to be able to say that about the same name!).

DextroDependant · 03/03/2018 15:33

I love Elsie and would have it as short for Elspeth.

Not keen on Daphne at all, just reminds me of Scooby doo.

BewareOfDragons · 03/03/2018 15:35

Elsie sounds like a nickname to me. I do know a couple of primary school aged 'Elsies', but I find the name 'meh'.

Daphne is a name in and of itself and more unusual these days. Better than Elsie.

Prefer Delphine, as another poster suggested.

BuzzKillington · 03/03/2018 15:36

Daphne awful. Elsie moderately better.

heateallthebuns · 03/03/2018 15:36

Elsie, daphne sounds old fashioned not in a good way to me.

villainousbroodmare · 03/03/2018 15:40

Elsie is a scullery maid with chilblains and a perpetually dripping nose. She scuttled along the skirting boards like a shy little mouse and blushes when addressed.
Daphne is a tiny old lady, never married, who wears a mobcab and a fresh sprigged apron every day. She makes wonderful marmalade. She lives with her bedridden sister, Mabel.

Marv1nGay3 · 03/03/2018 15:48

Daphne is a beautiful, classic name.
Don’t much like Elsie although I think Elspeth is pretty.

Broodmare GrinGrin
Someone should start a thread where you have to write who is every name.

scoutcat · 03/03/2018 15:51

I love Elsie! My mum and dad wanted to call me Elspeth (I was very grateful they didn't when I was little). Now I wish they had so I could shorten it to Elsie!

MikeUniformMike · 03/03/2018 15:57

Broodmare has a swishy ponytail and clip-cloppy feet,

BrendasUmbrella · 03/03/2018 16:18

Hebe could be an option

Pronounced like heebie-jeebie? Or Haybee?

BrendasUmbrella · 03/03/2018 16:25

Not keen on Daphne at all, just reminds me of Scooby doo.

That's why I like it, Daphne is an icon! (If I am thinking of the right one - tall with swishy red hair and "y'all" accent, or was she the short one with bowl cut and glasses?)

stellarfox · 03/03/2018 17:13

Daphne is lovely. Elsie isn’t a bad name but I can imagine there will be a lot of them as well as Elsa’s

FartnissEverbeans · 03/03/2018 18:07

If I had a Daphne I would nickname her Dot Smile

chocatoo · 03/03/2018 18:17

Can you cope if people call her Daphers? I think it likely.

AnotherRoadsideAttraction · 03/03/2018 18:21

Daphne is a strong, elegant name.

Elsie is a cute name. And very, very popular in our area.

What about Elspeth? Then you could use Elsie as a nn.

AnotherRoadsideAttraction · 03/03/2018 18:22

Snap scoutcat - I missed your post!

Kittykatmacbill · 03/03/2018 20:07

Daphne is lovely good baby-child-adult name. Elsie is fine but there will be billions of them.

SuperBeagle · 03/03/2018 20:14

I prefer Daphne, but if you're after "Fi" as a nickname, I wouldn't recommend it. Daphne is likely to get shortened to Daf/Daffy.

Delphi might lend itself more to "Fi".

namechangedtoday15 · 03/03/2018 20:24

Feel like I need a klaxon Smile first time ever on a baby name thread I can say 'beautiful names'!

Slight preference for Daphne but both gorgeous!

Remote1candles · 03/03/2018 20:28

Daphne reminds me of Daffy Duck. Elsie is OK, a relative has called her baby that, as has at least one of her friends, so is clearly becoming popular.

Rodent01 · 03/03/2018 21:46

I've got a 7 month old Daphne, get lots of compliments on her name.

Nicknames currently include Daffy, Daffy Duck, Phnee, Daffers, but these change weekly and will prob all phase out when she gets to talking stage.

ariettyspaghetti · 03/03/2018 21:48

my dog is called daphne 👍🏼
