Otto?

I know naming your baby is such a personal decision but I would really appreciate some opinions... My DH and I have been looking at baby names for some time, we both absolutely love the name Otto (although we have no German family connections;) for some reason it’s just a name we feel a strong affinity to. The middle name would be Denis after my father that passed away when I was young. I’ve already seen two mumsnet posts about this name (*back in 2012) where people have referenced the Simpsons etc. but I feel as it’s 6 years later and the name has grown in popularity, people’s opinions may have changed. Our baby’s full name would be Otto Denis Mason. Thoughts?

I like it. It sounds like you both love it so you should definitely use it.

  1. Reminds me of Otto bins
  2. Reminds me of Otto from The Simpsons
  3. Americans/most Australians/Kiwis/loads of other people have lazy pronunciation and will pronounce it "Oddo", which is ugly

Otis is nicer.

shetookshelter · 28/02/2018 02:13

Love it.

bridgetbishop · 28/02/2018 02:15

I love Otto. A beautiful name.

I like it.

I don't think you need roots from a country to use a name with that background! I used to love Otto but now it just reminds me of that poor boy who got arrested for stealing a poster in North Korea and makes me feel sad. But other than that connection it's cute.

quinqin · 28/02/2018 07:07

I like Otto, also like Otis too

villamariavintrapp · 28/02/2018 07:14

I quite like it. With the surname it sounds a bit like automation, but I think that's ok..

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 28/02/2018 07:15

I love it.

Juancornetto · 28/02/2018 07:15

Lovely name

I don't like it (reminds me of Bismarck and history lessons). It has come back into fashion though, and I know two young Ottos. If you love it, use it!

DeputyBrennan · 28/02/2018 10:06

Lovely - simple and strong. Much nicer than Otis, in my opinion.

FartnissEverbeans · 28/02/2018 15:34

Great name

17caterpillars1mouse · 28/02/2018 15:35

I think Otto is a cute but hsndsome name. There was an Otto a few years below me at school and I always thought it was a cool name

Moominfan · 28/02/2018 15:53

I love it. Met a really cute little baby called Otto and it suited him perfectly. Love to have it as a name option for my second but we have a theo so to samey samey

Midnightpony · 28/02/2018 15:55

I think it's nice

I always thought the guy in the Simpsons was called Auto because he drove the bus

niceupthedance · 28/02/2018 16:19

Love it

viktoria · 01/03/2018 21:19

Love it. Simple, strong name

DramaAlpaca · 01/03/2018 21:23

I find it very harsh sounding & I've never liked it. Sorry.

But you clearly both love it & that's what matters so go for it Smile

FogCutter · 01/03/2018 21:34

Love your names and how you are honouring your dad.

MikeUniformMike · 01/03/2018 21:55

I don't like Otis at all.
Otto - I wouldn't use it but I can see the appeal, it's quite straightforward in terms of spelling and pronunciations etc. If you love it, then yes, use it. Are there any similar names you like? I like Leo and Matteo and think them a little bit in the same vein.
