Girls list

Baby girl due in a few months and we're struggling to agree on a name. DH likes very traditional names whereas I prefer names that are timeless but a little more unusual.

With that in mind we've come up with the following list:

Olive
Imogen
Esme
Beatrice/Beatrix
Martha
Daphne
Juliet
Dorothy
Zoe
Ingrid

Opinions please!

I love Beatrice/Beatrix and Juliet - both classic and timeless
I like Dorothy, Martha and Olive - 'old' names but I'm yet to meet one (I have two under three)

Beatrice, Dorothy and Olive were on my list :)

Imogen - Popular name I've met a few but don't like it
Esme - I've met a few at baby/toddler clubs and not keen
Daphne and Ingrid - don't like either
Zoe - very 80's

FissionChips · 27/02/2018 07:14

Juliet is my favourite from that list, I lik Beatrix too but that is becoming very common, they’ll be 5 with the same name in your child’s class.

junebirthdaygirl · 27/02/2018 07:23

Great list. Like all those names but my favourite are Dorothy and Martha. Unusual enough still l think and lovely names.

Rhodes2015again · 27/02/2018 07:27

Martha is beautiful!

Chienrouge · 27/02/2018 07:29

I had Imogen and Juliet on my list! Unfortunately DH wasn’t keen.
I don’t like Dorothy, Daphne, esme or ingrid. Like Beatrice, Martha and Zoe. Not keen on olive.

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 27/02/2018 07:29

Olive - I like Olivia, its popularity notwithstanding, but I can't get with the love for Olive. Not keen
Imogen - pretty and sophisticated but I think it lived off its unusualness and now it's no longer unusual - a bit faddy
Esme - also faddy
Beatrice/Beatrix - love Beatrice, less keen on Beatrix
Martha - love it, but it won't travel well - in most of the world it would end up being pronounced 'Marta' (this may not matter to you, but names travelling well mattered to me as I'm an expat)
Daphne - this was featured on the 'hipster girls' names' thread. Up and coming, I think
Juliet - not keen, tragic associations
Dorothy - quite sweet; don't think it's a name that 'grows' well, though - prefer Dorothea
Zoe - love this
Ingrid - not one of my favourite Scandi names - prefer Astrid or Inga

Chienrouge · 27/02/2018 07:32

Martha - love it, but it won't travel well - in most of the world it would end up being pronounced 'Marta' (this may not matter to you, but names travelling well mattered to me as I'm an expat)

I love the Spanish pronunciation of Martha! We used to live in Spain and I had a couple of friends with the name.

happytobemrsg · 27/02/2018 07:33

Out if your list I like Olive best

NameChangeDestroyer · 27/02/2018 07:34

Juliet

chezmk1988 · 27/02/2018 07:39

Love Martha, beatrix and Juliet but prefer the spelling Juliette

SuperBeagle · 27/02/2018 08:28

Olive - I like Olive a lot, but I don't think it's a timeless classic. I think it's having a bit of a spurt right now, as it did 100 years ago, and well then die off into relative obscurity.

Imogen - Love this.

Esme - I'm not a fan of this.

Beatrice/Beatrix - Not a fan.

Martha - I like this, but I have the same concerns about it as I do about Olive.

Daphne - Love this.

Juliet - Love this.

Dorothy - Really dislike. To me, Dorothy will always be the girl from The Wizard of Oz and the dinosaur from The Wiggles. I cannot picture it on an actual person under the age of 80.

Zoe - Like this.

Ingrid - Not a fan. I find it quite harsh sounding.

My favourite of your list is probably Juliet, and least favourite is Dorothy.

Elfyn · 27/02/2018 09:00

I love Ingrid, Beatrix and Olive especially!

Chopchopbusybusy · 27/02/2018 09:03

Juliet is lovely and Martha is quite nice.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 27/02/2018 09:05

❤️ Zoe.

ChocolateCrunch · 27/02/2018 09:05

Some lovely names on your list. My favourites are Martha, Olive and Dorothy.

JellyBeanPaws · 27/02/2018 09:08

I like Esme and Beatrice as they could be nn Trixxy (Call The Midwife FanWink)

MammieBear · 27/02/2018 09:41

Good mix of names!

I think Zoe, not come across it in a long time and it is rather sweet.

Sophronia · 27/02/2018 10:49

Martha and Juliet are my favourites.

BabloHoney · 27/02/2018 11:01

Daphne is a great name! Also love Zoe and Esme but Daphne is the best, I really wanted it but other half vetoed it Hmm

Uhohmummy · 27/02/2018 11:27

I love Ingrid from your list. DH wouldn’t let me use it which I’m still sad about. I think it’s feminine and elegant by strong, and like the nickname Iggy for a little one.
Like most of the others but not Esme or Olive which sound ugly to me.

AnyaMoondial · 27/02/2018 13:03

Ingrid and Beatrice for me, both awesome.

SingedChinchilla · 27/02/2018 13:29

Thanks for your input everyone!

Olive has been my favourite for a long time but we have a toddler whose name begins with O which makes me a little wary of using it. No idea if that's a rational thought or not!

Daphne is the name of DH's Gran and it's likely the baby will be born on or very close to her birthday. If we don't use it as a first name it will definitely be a middle name.

I'm not looking for a "pretty" name as such, more something that suggests a strong, creative girl. I realise how pretentious that sounds - cringing as I type Confused

@AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight (Great username) I've only ever met one Imogen and that was when I was about 4! Is it really "faddy"? I do like Astrid but our surname begins with A and I'm not keen on the alliteration.

@JellyBeanPaws I've never seen Call The Midwife so had no idea about the Esme and Beatrix connection. It's really put me off to be honest but thank you, it's helping the process of elimination!

I know one or two very creative Olive's! Don't think it matters that you have a other O...

lovelyjubilly · 27/02/2018 16:08

We had a few of those on our list as well as the following if they're of any interest ...

Nancy
Audrey
Annie
Alba
Heidi
Hazel
Rosa

Lifeaback · 27/02/2018 23:33

I like Beatrice or ingrid the most
