I'm 32 weeks pg with dc2.

Got a 2 year old DS called Theo. Loved his name because it wasnt too popular but not chavy either.

We don't know the sex but have a huge struggle with girls names. I have just suddenly tonight realised I actually really love the name Alana.

But what's your opinions? We've kept all name options entirely to ourselves so need opinions of strangers :-)

I would like it pronounced 'Ah-larnah' as opposed to 'Al-Anna'

Is the spelling correct for this?

If you have this name or a do with this name do you find the spelling and pronunciation an issue?

Lastly does it get shortened to anything?

Theo doesn't and I can't see that Alana could apart from 'Lana' maybe.

Is it even a nice name? !

I don't like it, sorry. It seems very outdated to me. I prefer just Lana.

I would pronounce it ah-lah-nah.

NotCornflakes · 24/02/2018 22:30

I quite like it, one of my friends at school was an Alana. I pronounce it Ah-lah-na.

frenchfancynancy · 24/02/2018 22:31

Ah-lag-na

Casmama · 24/02/2018 22:31

You may pronounce it Ah-larnah but no one else in the world will so you would be setting your daughter up with a lifetime of explaining why her name is pronounced in a made up way.
I like the name but suggest you either go with it and pronounce it properly or pick something else.

tinkerbellone · 24/02/2018 22:32

My daughter is Alannah. It means 'darling child' in Gaelic.
I pronounce it Al-anna
Other people pronounce it A-lar-na.
I shorten her name to Lanny.
Hope that helps :)

frenchfancynancy · 24/02/2018 22:32

AH-Lah-na even!

IggyAce · 24/02/2018 22:33

It was a contender for DD and I would prounce it like pp.

chiruri · 24/02/2018 22:34

Knew a couple in school (am now 32), but spelled Alanna. Have always heard it pronounced al-AH-nah. Note I am Scottish and would never naturally insert an invisible ‘r’ into a word.

honeyroar · 24/02/2018 22:35

A lah na.. It's quite nice.

Sloppychops · 24/02/2018 22:35

I really like it. I'd pronounce it Ah-lah-na.

Yellowshadeofgreen · 24/02/2018 22:36

I know a few Alannagh around these parts. I think there was a singer Alannagh Myles. It’s very pretty.

WhyTheHeckMe · 24/02/2018 22:36

Casmama I don't really get your comment, Its not made up? ! Maybe it's just the way I wrote it. I mean A-lar-na / Ah-Larna - A-larnah or whatever. Just not Al-Anna. Do u get it now ??

BrutusMcDogface · 24/02/2018 22:38

I've known loads of Alanas pronounced "a-lar-na!" So no, she wouldn't spend a lifetime telling people how to pronounce it! Depends where you live, maybe?

WhyTheHeckMe · 24/02/2018 22:38

Ah good, so most of u are saying the same pronunciation that I'm thinking :-)

Those that know one, does she get nicknamed?

Thanks all

It's an accent thing.

I'm from the south east and say barth instead of bath and parth instead of path. So, I would pronounce Alana like you would, OP. But you will encounter people who pronounce it differently.

BrutusMcDogface · 24/02/2018 22:39

My last comment was aimed at casmama, too.

If it was spelled Alannah or Alanna, I'd expect it to be pronounced as it's spelled (a-lan-a).

Casmama · 24/02/2018 22:39

Sorry my message looks quite rude but it might be because I’m Scottish too and like chiruri would never put in an invisible r. Obviously others would so it must be an accent thing. Apologies

chiruri · 24/02/2018 22:39

The one I knew very occasionally got called Lanny, but was by a mutual friend notorious for making up silly nicknames. Otherwise was always just Alanna.

WhyTheHeckMe · 24/02/2018 22:40

Thanks tinkerbell, how old is your dd? Do you think your way of spelling (Alannah) is the most popular?

OP posts:
VioletCharlotte · 24/02/2018 22:40

I love the name Alana. I would pronounce it Al-arn-a.

BrutusMcDogface · 24/02/2018 22:41

I taught one, op, and afaik she was always called by her full name and never any nicknames or diminutives. "Lana" is the obvious one, though! Smile

BlessYourCottonSocks · 24/02/2018 22:42

Casmama pronounce it 'properly'? Confused How the hell would you pronounce it?

I would pronounce it exactly the same as OP. A - larna.

As opposed to A-lanna.

I would pronounce 'Alannah' as 'A-lanna'.

BlessYourCottonSocks · 24/02/2018 22:43

Sorry - cross posted.

daffodildreamer · 24/02/2018 22:43

I was at school with an Alana (Ah-lar-na), known as Lana (lar-na)

She had gorgeous long ringlets!

She’ll be over 40 now. No idea how her hair is.

I like the name OP and I’m really fussy.

Casmama · 24/02/2018 22:44

I would pronounce them both as Al - anna.
