What girl's name might we both like?

His favourites are Emily, Hannah, Charlotte, Louise and Flora (which I like but feel like we can't use).

My favourites are Francesca, Alma (it's such a "warm" name imo), Leona, Elena (DH doesn't like it for admittedly very understandable reasons) and Selma (DH vetoed it).

TIA :)

Cora
Nora
Wanda

Anna is v nice too.

AntArcticFox · 12/02/2018 00:56

Maybe if I was Italian I'd find that it jarred, I'd definitely say no to Patience or Chastity as an English speaker!

Frombothsidesnow · 12/02/2018 01:08

From the suggestions you've had, Julia is pretty classic. How about Celia? Might Rebecca work?

I know a baby Ayla

Snuper · 12/02/2018 07:56

Has anyone mentioned Sylvia?

Emmeline? Or Emmelina.

Eliza

Love Clara.

My parents are both native Italian speakers... Maybe that's why I like Cara (and Carina) but feel like it's a bit "weird".

Rebecca is nice but sounds super religious to me personally. (even more than names like Maria etc. Idk why...)

I like Emmelina.

And DH said that Calla is "not bad at all." Yay :) !

Laura seems to fit both your and your DH's criteria.

And I love Cassandra/ Cassie.

floriad · 12/02/2018 09:55

I have an imo incredibly annoying cousin named Laura... :=/

Cassandra is nice :)

Other names I think DH might agree to:

Theodora or "just" Dora (I actually really like Theodora and Dora. Do they still count as "classic" / somewhat neutral names?)

Carlotta or "just" Lotta

Erica?

Theodora nn Dora is lovely.

Laura is meh.

Carlotta is really hard sounding!

Erica even harsher. No short form. Ek is a possibility - very far away from your initial brief!

Calla is nice but seems unfinished.

Cassandra nn Cassie is lovely.

Josephine/Josephina? (Posy, Josie, Jossy)

Belinda?

floriad · 12/02/2018 10:07

fizzy

true. Carlotta sounds really harsh with an English or German pronunciation...

Calla is nice but seems unfinished.

I know what you mean.

I think I'll ask DH whether he'd agree to Theodora nn Dora, Dora, Flavia or maybe Callista....?

(this is really difficult, btw. We need a name that works in German and the UK and is "classic". And me being from an Italian family complicates things even further....)

FizzyGreenWater · 12/02/2018 10:12

Ooh German. Johanna?

(prn Yohanna)

?Hanna, Hannie for short?

FizzyGreenWater · 12/02/2018 10:13

I think you have it with Theodora, though. Even if it ends up as Teodora with some of the family, still absolutely lovely. And Dora is very sweet.

Fizzy

yup. German :) DH would definitely go for Hanna(h) nn Hannie. I just think that it's lovely but slightly "boring". But maybe that's what makes it a classic?

Yup, I hope he'll agree to Theodora as a girl's name. (and yes, it will definitely become Teodora in my family. But I actually like both pronunications.)

Thanks :)!!

@ShowMeTheElf

I adora Kira / Chiara but DH said no (rather vehemently).

(I know that they're not the same name / have different origins and pronunciations btw. But DH doesn't like either...)

Hmm yes Hannah is a classic and I like it, and know a couple of lovely Hannahs, but I probably wouldn't use it and I do think it's a bit boring. And had a period of being very popular in the uk in the 80s-90s so lots of Hannahs around!

floriad · 12/02/2018 10:36

That's my reaction to most of DH's suggestions.

I understand the advantage of a name like that. but they just don't feel right.

Maybe I should just agree to "let" DH pick my name.... (the name he truly wants to use.)

(But I personally am admittedly still stuck on Francesca...)
