Hello, long time lurker first time (names board) poster.

We have DD due in June and currently debating names.

Top contenders currently Imogen vs Jemima.

Surname is short (4 letters), starts with a vowel so "rules" had been that first name must be 2 or more syllables & end with a hard sound (though Jemima obviously throws that out!).

I like both but worry that Imogen sounds a bit private school Tarquin-esque if that makes sense ... 😳

I love the name Jemima. Also like Margot and Dorothy from your list.

I'd say Jemima is more Tarquinish. Going on the basis that I know 3, all of which attended boarding school. That's not me being offensive btw, that wouldn't put me off. I like Imogen, not a huge fan of 'Imo', Theodora and Margot are lovely!

Imogen is quite popular where I live. I prefer Jemima (again a few round my way)

Beatrice is having a bit of a spike in popularity at the moment.

Dorothy is a bit frumpyish to me, but Dorothea is pretty, with a similar vibe to Theodora.

I like them all. I would probably say I like Jemima the least, and I personally prefer the name Beatrix to Beatrice.

Thanks all. No clear winner! I like Dorothy as it was my Gran's name but I feel a bit weird calling a child after a close relative - like they need their own identity. I quite like Theodora for that reason but DH isn't keen.

Imogen is probably edging it at the moment but it's a marathon not a sprint 😂

I wanted to call dd Imogen, but my gran who was 92 at the time bless her, told everyone we'd called the baby Imagine! Kind of lost it's appeal after that (DH wasn't 100% sure anyway though).

I know an Imogen with nn modge which I think is super cute. I don't think it is a particularly posh name.

Beatrice is my fave from your list.

Harriet meets your criteria of ending with a hard sound. Or Bridget.

Imogen is fine, wouldn't say it was private school at all.

I love Beatrice , Jemima and Margot from your list. Personally not keen on Imogen. Do you like shortenings/nicknames? Prefer longer names on bc? Margot is already a shortened form of Margaret isn't it? I like the nickname Mima for Jemima but less keen on Jem, likewise I don't like Immy/ Imo for Imogen. Beatrice has lots of lovely options.

How about Florence, Martha, Alice, Mabel, Bonnie?

Yes I do like nicknames so Imogen would definitely end up as Immy or Im (I like modge too).

Jemima I guess would inevitably be Jem which I don't really like.

I'm being silly about the private school thing, I just have an image of me braying IMO!!! across a playground and sounding objectionable 😳😂

I like Margot nn Maggie - a very close aunt (childless, my godmother so very much part of my family) is Margaret so I quite like Margot for this reason while also being a different name. DH unconvinced.

I love Harriet and so does DH but it's the name of one of my very old friends so I'd feel weird about using it!

We have DS Fraser if that colours anyone's views! Imogen and Fraser? Fraser and Margot? Fraser and Jemima? Hmmmm

Marguerite or Margaret - I like both. and Margarita.

We are in NZ where mimi is Māori for wee (as in urine) so that nn is a non starter 😂

I prefer Imogen to Jemima and Jemima sounds much more private school esque than Imogen.
