What about Marla?

Struggling for a name for our baby girl due in a month from now. Came across Marla on a list somewhere and it is really growing on me, and to an extent DH too. But he has mentioned that his only pop culture reference for it is Helena Bonham Carter's character in Fight Club.

I can't decide if this has put me off or not!

Is Fight Club your first thought on hearing it as a name? Or do you have a different association? Do you like it as a name anyway?

My first and only thought Marla Hooch.....

Fekko · 04/02/2018 16:03

Marples. Oh no...

JugglingMummyof2 · 04/02/2018 16:05

She came into her own. I love Marla...

Interesting! I hadn't heard of Marla Maples and hadn't seen League of their Own (DH has but can't remember which is the character in question). Hmm. Are they significant enough associations that if you met a kid called Marla, you would be unable to think of anything other than those associations?

Reminds me of the little girl who shakes memo in the bag in finding memo 🙈 her name was Darla tho!

Fekko · 04/02/2018 16:13

I actually quite like it though. It sounds nice, and not weird and wonderful.

JugglingMummyof2 · 04/02/2018 16:25

Yes but we love the movie. If someone says while looking in the mirror in the morning - "what do you suggest" everyone else shouts back " a lot of night games" - both DD's love the movie, as do I. I suspect we are not representative of the general population.

My first thought was Marla Maples and I can't think of any other associations. But I think it's a rather nice name

deaddeadgood · 04/02/2018 16:36

Maples?

FlipflopFifi · 04/02/2018 16:36

I think Fight Club but it's a nice name

gillyweed · 04/02/2018 17:25

I have a Marla. Full name Marleyna. She gets called all sorts to be fair... Marley, Marls, Leyna. But mainly Marla. From people's reactions it's a bit of a marmite name, we obviously love it though!

TatianaLarina · 04/02/2018 21:27

I quite like Marlena. I too thought immediately of Marla Maples.

It's a sort of well known plasticine clay in Ireland, so it sounds strange to me because of that. Used in many primary schools Grin

Rainbowsandflowers78 · 04/02/2018 22:44

Carla is better

Zazu44 · 04/02/2018 22:46

I know a Marlia

teenytinypontypine · 04/02/2018 23:07

Hmm food for thought, thanks all. Not loving the Irish Play-Doh connection Grin we have some Irish family and I wouldn't want them taking the piss when we visit!

It can be called Marla or Mala (I realise to RP speakers that may sound exactly the same - but it isn't Grin ) so that might affect how well they know it!

You still see it about in schools sometimes. Older generations would more than likely know it.

DiegoMadonna · 06/02/2018 18:47

I love it. And I love the Fight Club character and Helena Bonham Carter in general, so that certainly wouldn't put me off.
