Is this too old fashioned?

We've just found out that DC is a boy (previously told it was a girl!) so back to square 1 with names.

I know "old man" names are fashionable but this isn't old,old and I wonder if it feels dated. It's also not particularly common at the moment but not unheard of.
I like strong names that can be shortened, with the short form making you think "dependable bloke".

What do you all think of Andrew (Andy)?

Lovely timeless name.

Plumes · 30/01/2018 14:46

It's a pretty classic name so I can't imagine it causing any double takes. Similar to Simon or Robert.

sexnotgender · 30/01/2018 14:47

Not old fashioned, it’s lovely.

thUnderdog · 30/01/2018 14:47

It's a lovely name

AdaColeman · 30/01/2018 14:47

I like Andrew, though I prefer Drew as a nn rather than Andy.

Plumes · 30/01/2018 14:47

As to what I personally think of the name, well to mean Andrew means 'early 20s heartbreak of the most painful kind and sobbing on my best friend's shoulder for about 6 months'.

prettymess · 30/01/2018 14:48

It’s great and timeless.

helpmum2003 · 30/01/2018 14:48

I think Andrew completely meets your criteria - I don't think you can go far wrong with it. It's a 1970s/1980s name I would say the last time it was popular. No doubt it will become popular again at some stage but I don't think you'll find many now and everyone knows how to spell it!!

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 30/01/2018 14:50

Andrew is lovely. Andy is not. Unfortunately you can’t have Andrew without Andy slipping in somewhere along the way. Unless you insist everyone calls him Andrew and prepare to post threads whingeing about inlaws calling him Andy Grin

AlbertaSimmons · 30/01/2018 14:50

There seem to be Andrews in every generation. I know a 7 yr old Andrew and several in their 60s and 70s. It was ubiquitous in my age group (mid 50s, born in the 60s). It's nice, prefer Drew to Andy.

FairfaxAikman · 30/01/2018 14:52

@AdaColeman sadly Drew is not an option. No Andrew in our family will ever be known as that again. My grans favourite brother was Drew and he died in tragic circumstances so out of respect it won't be used

Andy and Andrew are both nice. Drew just makes me think of Drew Barrymore.
Some friends have a 10yr old Andrew. When he was a baby I thought it was a bit boring, but it suits him and I now really like it. I'd say it was a classic name. He doesn't get called Andy.

CruCru · 30/01/2018 15:17

Andrew is a really nice name.

fourmileswide · 30/01/2018 15:22

DC has a friend called Andrew (18)

TheScottishPlay · 30/01/2018 15:25

Perhaps it's different here in Scotland but to me Andrew isn't just an 'Old Man' name.
I know Andrews aged 3 to 90+.

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 30/01/2018 15:26

Nice and underused.

Thistlebelle · 30/01/2018 15:27

Andrew is a classic name, not an old man name at all.

It fits in the same box as Matthew, David and Peter, classic Biblical names traditionally used in the U.K. and found in every generation.

I know two small boy Andrews neither of whom are called anything but Andrew. I also know an adult Andrew who is only called Andrew without any shortenings.

It’s a great name OP, a definite winner.

Annabelle4 · 30/01/2018 15:57

I adore the name Andrew.

NotAgainYoda · 30/01/2018 15:58

Great name

Dues a resurgence, along with John, Michael, David etc

chocatoo · 30/01/2018 16:02

One of the few on here that has my approval. Nice for a boy and also manly.

NoSwsForYou · 30/01/2018 16:12

I taught an Andrew who would be 7/8 now so, although underused for younger children it’s not unheard of! He was an absolute cracker of a little boy too, so although it never made my shortlist I’ve only got positive connotations for it.

MikeUniformMike · 30/01/2018 16:12

It's not just me then. I like classic names where you know that they will sound ok on any age person. The popular names seem to be very twee, surnames or long.
Andrew has the advantage of being a royal, saint and biblical name, and it is one that travels ok.
I'd put it on par with George, David, Patrick, Charles, James, Matthew, Peter, Michael and so on.

ChocolateCrunch · 30/01/2018 16:25

Love this name. Will always be a classic.

ReggaetonLente · 30/01/2018 16:26

I've never met an Andrew I didn't like!

thisismadness77 · 30/01/2018 16:50

I like it. My bil is Andrew, I’ve never heard anyone call him Andy.
