Is this too old fashioned?

We've just found out that DC is a boy (previously told it was a girl!) so back to square 1 with names.

I know "old man" names are fashionable but this isn't old,old and I wonder if it feels dated. It's also not particularly common at the moment but not unheard of.
I like strong names that can be shortened, with the short form making you think "dependable bloke".

What do you all think of Andrew (Andy)?

I don't like it personally. It's not an old man's name so much as just the most vanilla name on the planet.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 30/01/2018 16:53

Like Andrew dislike Andy. Unusual for me as I'm a fan of shortened names.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 30/01/2018 17:33

Oh I love Andrew. It's fab. That'd be so refreshing in a class full of Charlies Olivers and Harrys

userabcname · 30/01/2018 17:48

I know someone with a baby called Andrew. Very cute!

daisypond · 30/01/2018 19:08

Yes, it's nice. All the Andrews I know were born in the '60s, so it's due a revival, and it's a classic name, just not classic in the "kings and queens" sense that have been popular over the last few years. Prince Andrew, of course...but I'll put him out of my mind.

Mollie85 · 30/01/2018 19:16

My amazing Dad's name. Love it - timeless :)

Ohyesiam · 30/01/2018 19:28

I know a 15 year old Andrew, never known as Andy.

DramaAlpaca · 30/01/2018 20:17

I love Andrew, it's an underused classic.

I regretted not using it as a middle name & was really pleased when one of my boys chose it as his confirmation name.

EggsonHeads · 30/01/2018 20:20

100% of Andies I have known have been 40+ do I guess it must have been very popular at one point.

mondler · 30/01/2018 20:20

I like it and don't think it's dated Smile

MammieBear · 30/01/2018 20:48

Nothing wrong with it, good strong name

greendale17 · 30/01/2018 20:52

Wet fish of a name

SuperBeagle · 30/01/2018 20:53

Andrew is a great name. I'm surprised it's not more popular.

WunWun · 30/01/2018 22:11

I'm so surprised by these reactions. To me Andrew is the name of a bland dullard.

I used to know someone who had an Andrew, Steven and Matthew and it made me think 'wow, you really couldn't be arsed could you'. I mean, I'm not in to really out there names, but Andrew... come on!

MikeUniformMike · 30/01/2018 22:15

Yes WunWun, much more imaginative to call them Jadon, Jensen and Jaxon.

Thistlebelle · 30/01/2018 22:16

Wun you clearly know the wrong Andrews! Grin

TheVanguardSix · 30/01/2018 22:16

I love the name Andrew.
Every Andrew I've ever known is distinguished and cool. Very handsome name.

ChimpyChops · 30/01/2018 22:17

Lovely name!
I can't use it as used to be engaged to an Andrew. It would definitely be a front runner else.

BikeRunSki · 30/01/2018 22:18

To me personally... Andrew is my bi, tall, older, funny, clever, eccentric and gregarious who I adore. He is in his 50s and has never been called Andy.

Him aside, I know/work with several others. Some are Andys, some are not, one is a Drew, one is known largely by his surname. Aged 25-60ish. I find it a completely unremarkable name. Perfectly nice, just unremarkable.

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 30/01/2018 22:18

I like Andrew

It falls in the same category as Peter, Michael, Robert, David etc

Underused at present but a classic

A refreshing change!

Mischa123 · 30/01/2018 22:29

Funnily enough I was talking to my DD about someone I know today called Andy and she said ' I bet he is nice, Andy sounds like the sort of name of a person who is always nice and happy'

RaininSummer · 30/01/2018 22:54

Tis a good name.

student26 · 30/01/2018 22:55

It's lovely! But then again it is my husbands name :D he hates being called Andy though.

Sophronia · 30/01/2018 22:59

Andrew is lovely and I think Andy is really cute.

Joeybee · 30/01/2018 23:32

I like Andrew. I don't think it's dated, I think it is one of those timeless, classic names. I love that it isn't as popular now than it once was. If I didn't have a brother in law called Andrew, then I'd totally use that name.
