Is this too old fashioned?

We've just found out that DC is a boy (previously told it was a girl!) so back to square 1 with names.

I know "old man" names are fashionable but this isn't old,old and I wonder if it feels dated. It's also not particularly common at the moment but not unheard of.
I like strong names that can be shortened, with the short form making you think "dependable bloke".

What do you all think of Andrew (Andy)?

I like Andrew and would consider it if I have another boy. Not keen on Andy though. Maybe just let a nn develop (or not) on its own.

Talou7 · 31/01/2018 03:17

I adore both Andrew and Andy for a first name. It's definitely a timeless name and doesn't sound dated at all. It will be the middle name of our first DS after two close family members.

Grimmfebruary · 31/01/2018 03:32

We’ve just used it as our middle name so I’m totally biased and love it :)

FairfaxAikman · 01/02/2018 12:01

Thanks for the input everyone.
Think we are going to go with it - there been far more positive comments than negative.
I definitely see it as a name that will suit him at all stages in life and will work for a shop worker as well as a high court judge.

As dSis has two kids with "out there" names I also think DF will appreciate a grandchild with a name he doesn't have to ask how to pronounce first time round Grin

We're in Scotland and I know lots of Andrews.

Great name.

FairfaxAikman · 01/02/2018 14:17

I'm in Scotland too @k2p2k2tog but the only Andrew I know is in his 50s.

I know several Andrews of different ages. It’s a nice name OP

Misses the point of the thread completely
But was it an early scan you had that told you girl? And then 20 week said boy?
I've had 3 scans all saying girl now but I'm still worried haha

FairfaxAikman · 01/02/2018 15:16

I get extra scans as high risk of diabetes @user1499786242.

Couldn't tell at 20 weeks. Found out at 28.

OP posts:
FairfaxAikman · 01/02/2018 15:17

*"couldn't tell 100%" that should say.
Sonographer said she thought girl but wasn't confident.
Was blimming obvious by 28.

If Drew is completely out then I wouldn,t use Andrew- you really have no control over names once they are out in the world.

TatianaLarina · 01/02/2018 15:24

I dunno love Scottish male names, I’d be tempted to give him something more Scottish.

FairfaxAikman · 01/02/2018 16:11

Don't mind if other use it Bertrand, just that we wouldn't.

user1499786242 · 01/02/2018 17:21

OP--- phew
I was thinking you were maybe told deffo girl at an early scan and they were wrong or something! But seems the first sonographer couldn't see clearly anyway!

Haha yeah I think boys are pretty obvious by that point!!!!

BertrandRussell · 01/02/2018 17:56

That’s OK then- we have a Patrick named after his grandfather, who was adamant that he should never ever be Paddy. But he is sometimes. It just happens!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 01/02/2018 19:16

...better than Patsy which ds1 friend gets. "We didn't see that one coming" said his mum!

I agree about Drew, it might just evolve and that would be that.

duckponds · 02/02/2018 11:02

‘Andy’- dependable bloke 😂😂😂. Sorry, that made me laugh out loud.

Andy to me means the local builder frequently seen with his arse hanging out. Very 80s as well. Sorry but think you could do much better!

UsernameInvalid66 · 02/02/2018 17:08

I love Andrew! It was very popular for boys about my age, so I've had lots of good associations with it, and in fact I can't ever remember meeting a nasty one! But it doesn't sound old-fashioned in a grandad sort of way, it's not like you're calling him Wilfred or something, it still sounds modern enough without being super popular at the moment.

For what it's worth, I don't understand why some people dislike "Andy" so much - it's the most logical short form of Andrew and to me it has a very similar feel, a sort of boy-next-door dependability.

BertrandRussell · 02/02/2018 17:15

Less than 300 Andrews born every year for the past few years......
