Griffin and Phoenix together

Pansy0926 · 27/01/2018 09:10

This question is not really for lovers of traditional baby names.

Me and my husband both love these names. Our 2.5 year old is called Griffin. I like that it is unusual but strong. It has tones of fantasy but also is kind of a ‘surname’ name, so more conservative people don’t wince when they hear it. Now we are thinking about our second boy due soon, and we have been unable to agree on anything. Phoenix was a favourite the first time round, but we dismissed it as being on the wrong side of unusual/weird. Thing is, now it seems to be quite a popular name in our town, and I have met three little boys called Phoenix, so I’m no longer so wary of it. I kind of wish we had called our first boy Phoenix instead.

Are Griffin and Phoenix too weird as names for brothers? My heart says yes, but honestly I would have called our kids those names separately, so it’s just the combination that puts me off.

Other names on my list (I say my list because as I said DH doesn’t like them enough but we can’t agree) are:

Afton
Avery
Jude (not keen on this though now)
Micah
Keron
Devin
Rueben

All hubby has contributed is Jack and Malakai, but I really don’t like either of them.

I would rather expect you to be a dragon or other mythical creature. I'm with you that either on its own in a sibling set would be fine but I wouldn't use them as brothers as I think they wouldn't appreciate the sniggering.

WetWipeofWonder · 27/01/2018 09:12

I really like Rueben (Rue) and think it goes nicely with Griffin.

CarlHickbread · 27/01/2018 09:13

I like it but I would think Phoenix was a girl as all the Phoenix’s that I know (2) are girls

crunchtime · 27/01/2018 09:14

Ruben much better than phoenix

BillywilliamV · 27/01/2018 09:15

Not both together, unless you live in a teepee and regularily wear a purple velvet tophat and dreadlocks.

Springhassprungagain · 27/01/2018 09:18

We’ve got a Griffin too and I too have considered Phoenix for a second and discounted it for exactly the same reasons!

Pansy0926 · 27/01/2018 09:19

Sigh. As I expected.

No, no teepee or tophat but there is one set of dreadlocks between us and we are a slightly quirky couple.

I would assume Phoenix was a girl, but regardless of that, together they are a bit much. I like Merlin.

Pansy0926 · 27/01/2018 09:20

Springhassprungagain May I ask what you went for in the end?

Pansy0926 · 27/01/2018 09:21

Merlin in a Scottish accent kills me sorry (that’s where we are), but it was considered lol

Then go for it with my blessing, vote Wyvern if you have a third.

BertrandRussell · 27/01/2018 09:26

I really wouldn't. Particularly if there's a possibility of you having a 3rd child.
Also, Griffin can call himself Griff if his name is a bit out there for him at any stage in his life. Phoenix isn't flexible.
Bear in mind too that Phoenix is incredibly predictable thing for a slightly "alternative" couple to call their child!

greekyoghurt · 27/01/2018 09:28

Awful, childish names. Try to be adult about what you’re lumbering a child with.

Pansy0926 · 27/01/2018 09:28

Lol BillywilliamV I hate we are playing into the stereotype but DH literally suggested Dragon last night which I dismissed as ridiculous. We aren’t that quirky though (or so I tell myself).

BertrandRussell · 27/01/2018 09:29

Could you go with Malachi? It's the traditional spelling I think.

Pansy0926 · 27/01/2018 09:34

Hmm tbh, I think we are getting a bit desperate as we struggle to agree. We did dismiss Phoenix for a reason after all, it was only it’s sudden popularity which had be reconsidering.

Reuben is the favourite at the moment and we both are happy enough with it, but we’ll keep thinking. I have loved Felix for ages but...ugh...cat food...

Springhassprungagain · 27/01/2018 09:34

We haven’t got there yet but current favourite is Percy!

Bekabeech · 27/01/2018 09:35

Please don't send your kids to my DC's school - those are the names of two of the houses.
On the other hand if you go on to have more children you could consider: Wyvern, Martlett and Falcon?

greekyoghurt · 27/01/2018 09:36

Griffin and Falcon 😂😂😂😂😂

Pansy0926 · 27/01/2018 09:38

Haha I loved Kestrel for a girl for a while .
Btw we don’t plan on a third child so there won’t be a string of mythical creatures...we didn’t plan on this theme

Pansy0926 · 27/01/2018 09:39

Spring,

OH said no to it but I liked Persephone for a girl with Persey/Percy as a nickname in mind

ChocolateCrunch · 27/01/2018 09:39

I like Griffin, but I wouldn't call a sibling Phoenix, personally. From your list, I like Avery.

How about:
Hudson
Magnus
Wyatt
Cooper
Callen
Logan

ElenaBothari · 27/01/2018 09:41

I wouldn’t use Phoenix with griffin tbh.

How about Orion? Similar feel.

BiologyMatters · 27/01/2018 09:42

I like reuben from your list. You can't really have griffin and Phoenix. Id think you'd been reading too many fantasy novels.

SuperBeagle · 27/01/2018 09:43

Yes, it's too much with Griffin.

I like Reuben best from your list. This is the correct spelling though, not Rueben.
