Griffin and Phoenix together

This question is not really for lovers of traditional baby names.

Me and my husband both love these names. Our 2.5 year old is called Griffin. I like that it is unusual but strong. It has tones of fantasy but also is kind of a ‘surname’ name, so more conservative people don’t wince when they hear it. Now we are thinking about our second boy due soon, and we have been unable to agree on anything. Phoenix was a favourite the first time round, but we dismissed it as being on the wrong side of unusual/weird. Thing is, now it seems to be quite a popular name in our town, and I have met three little boys called Phoenix, so I’m no longer so wary of it. I kind of wish we had called our first boy Phoenix instead.

Are Griffin and Phoenix too weird as names for brothers? My heart says yes, but honestly I would have called our kids those names separately, so it’s just the combination that puts me off.

Other names on my list (I say my list because as I said DH doesn’t like them enough but we can’t agree) are:

Afton
Avery
Jude (not keen on this though now)
Micah
Keron
Devin
Rueben

All hubby has contributed is Jack and Malakai, but I really don’t like either of them.

Love Griffin. I wouldn't put Phoenix with it though, personally.
I know a Deacon & Phoenix sibling pair, although Phoenix is a girl.
From your list I like Reuben best, spelt that way. Rueben looks like a spelling mistake.

I think they go well together OP.

Changed name for this as verrry outing. I used to work in a secure unit for patients with mental illness. We had two wards....you guessed it, Phoenix and Griffin. So for me, it's a no!

I wanted Griffin for my DS but DH was having none of it unfortunately and he never even wavered.

Not keen on Phoenix. Maybe because I know a proper twat of a woman with one.

IMO Griffin and Phoenix are too much together. If you like unusual Micah is my favourite of your list.

I like Phoenix!

How about Idris - lots of mythological significance and a dragon/fire related name

SilverLinings2014 · 28/01/2018 11:44

I have a Persephone. We call her Sephy for short.

Misses point of thread Grin

Yep they're not great together.

And they're not that similar in name terms either - Griffin isn't 'out there', really. I know two little Griffs with brothers called things like Hugo, Rory and Max. Phoenix isn't in the same bracket at all to me.

I'd also think - girl, not boy.

And I'd also think if you're the alternative types then it is so predictable as a pp said!

Like Reuben and also Malachi (spelled this way).

How about Heath, Magnus, Ranald?

And Felix is great, not cat food at all!
