Griffin and Phoenix together

This question is not really for lovers of traditional baby names.

Me and my husband both love these names. Our 2.5 year old is called Griffin. I like that it is unusual but strong. It has tones of fantasy but also is kind of a ‘surname’ name, so more conservative people don’t wince when they hear it. Now we are thinking about our second boy due soon, and we have been unable to agree on anything. Phoenix was a favourite the first time round, but we dismissed it as being on the wrong side of unusual/weird. Thing is, now it seems to be quite a popular name in our town, and I have met three little boys called Phoenix, so I’m no longer so wary of it. I kind of wish we had called our first boy Phoenix instead.

Are Griffin and Phoenix too weird as names for brothers? My heart says yes, but honestly I would have called our kids those names separately, so it’s just the combination that puts me off.

Other names on my list (I say my list because as I said DH doesn’t like them enough but we can’t agree) are:

Afton
Avery
Jude (not keen on this though now)
Micah
Keron
Devin
Rueben

All hubby has contributed is Jack and Malakai, but I really don’t like either of them.

Griffin and Phoenix would make me think you really like Harry Potter.

Gryffindor is a house in Harry Potter and the Phoenix is a bird which helps them defeat the dark lord.

From your list I like Reuben and Micah.

Rueben is quite popular where I am. I teach three and know a further two.
I love Griffin but Phoenix added makes it slightly Harry Potter.
Griffin and Albie
Griffin and Ned
Griffin and Thackeray
Finnegan, Oberon, Otis, Rufus

Our close friend has hijacked
Orion
Luna
Lyra
Leo
Sirius and several other names we like as pet names. So although I could still go for them, it feels a little weird

OfDragonsDeep · 27/01/2018 09:55

Xande

Buxbaum · 27/01/2018 11:12

I love Reuben and Felix.

How about Arthur?

Buxbaum · 27/01/2018 11:15

Or Morgan?

TheImprobableGirl · 27/01/2018 12:14

I like Orion too, Caelum, Perseus, Cetus, Gemini, pyxis are all other constellations. Or camelopalardis....

SheepySheepy · 27/01/2018 12:16

Love them all!

BSJohnson · 27/01/2018 12:26

Also, Griffin can call himself Griff if his name is a bit out there for him at any stage in his life. Phoenix isn't flexible.

Nonsense. He'll be calling himself Nick by the time he's 30. Grin

Ideal for a Coventry City fan.

I love both those names together. They sound like names for happy strong wild children. I say do it and sod what anyone thinks.

TitaniasCloset · 27/01/2018 13:06

And none then if she has a girl she can call her Ellie! Grin

MothershipG · 27/01/2018 13:33

I have a 18 year old Griffin and it's a fab name (though I say so myself) and actually pretty unremarkable so easy to live with.

And his sister's name starts with Phe - but isn't Phoenix 😉

Fifthtimelucky · 27/01/2018 16:47

If you're a Harry Potter fan, how about Raven (short for Ravenclaw, in the same way that Griffon could be short for Gryffindor)?

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 27/01/2018 18:11

I like Reuben too.😄

FanSpamTastic · 27/01/2018 19:44

How about

Solomon
Elijah
Cooper
Rowan

Wolfcub · 27/01/2018 19:53

I would probably choose Devin from your list. I think Griffin and Phoenix are a little too matchy

Winifredgoose10 · 27/01/2018 19:57

I really like Avery from your list. I think Griffin and Phoenix are too much together. What about using Phoenix as a middle name, so there is a nice link between the boys, without it being the central theme.

Anasnake · 27/01/2018 20:03

Gandalf, or maybe unicorn

Ohyesiam · 27/01/2018 20:50

It's kind of harry potter without the story line to hang it together.

Do read Persephone before you give it to anyone as a name.

Mrsknackered · 27/01/2018 20:52

Buckbeak is a good un

Shadowboy · 27/01/2018 20:58

I love Avery and Reuben. If we were going to have a boy I loved Otto and Barnaby.

Not keen on Phoenix - it feels both feminine and the X makes it feel a bit of the lot who would name their kids Jaxon and so on.

holidayqueriwifi · 27/01/2018 21:03

Griffin and Orson.

Both creatures and unusual.
