Hey!

Myself and my little girls Dad love the name Kaimana. I'm wondering what people think and how they would pronounce it at first glance?

It's hawaaiin meaning 'Diamond' or more importantly 'Power of the ocean'

Full name would be Kaimana Honua... Or Kaimana Azula... For now!

Would love to know what you all think!! 😊

It's lovely! Do you have Hawaiian heritage?
I would pronounce it kye-maana.
Is that how it is pronounced?

Sirzy · 23/01/2018 17:49

Ka-me-na

Personally I’m not keen, I don’t hate it but I don’t like it.

RavenWings · 23/01/2018 17:50

I think it's really pretty but a bit of an odd choice if you dont have some Hawaii link.

I'd guess at kai-man-ah (kai rhyming with eye), but would be very prepared to be wrong.

Afreshcuppateaplease · 23/01/2018 17:50

Kaymaanaa?

Not keen sorry

SeamLess · 23/01/2018 17:54

I’d pronounce it Kai-mah-na

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 23/01/2018 17:56

Kay-mana (to rhyme with Anna from frozen).

No feelings either way really.

AssassinatedBeauty · 23/01/2018 17:56

I'd pronounce it "kigh-mar-na" as in Kai to rhyme with "high" if that makes sense.

PeasAndHarmony · 23/01/2018 17:56

I'd pronounce it Ky-mar-na.

Is that right?

It's not to my taste at all but it does sound pretty!

ShotsFired · 23/01/2018 17:58

Nice if you do have Hawaiian roots, but very odd if not (or some other strongly identifying culture)

Did make me think of Chimaera when I first tried saying it though...

Meemzinha · 23/01/2018 18:00

Yep that's exactly how we would say it.. I've always loved the name Kaia/Kaya/Kaiya (any spelling) but I've noticed it on a lot of lists and feel like it may get popular, it's on a lot of name lists now... So Kaimana would be an option for her to also be called something even rarer!

Kay - Man - Ah

It's a pretty name.

MonaChopsis · 23/01/2018 18:03

Kye-mah-na

I don't like it... Too similar to 'kai moana' which means seafood in Maori, and I would worry with the film Moana having come out everyone would misread it!

Glitterspy · 23/01/2018 18:05

Its very pretty. I'd say Kay - MAR - nah or Kye - MAR - nah...

Meemzinha · 23/01/2018 18:08

Don't know if my reply went below the correct comment there! It would be pronounced Kai-ma-nah, kai rhyming with eye.

Thanks for the opinions so far! I think I love the meaning and nickname Kaia more than the sound of the name.. She's not due till May so plenty of time!

Oh and we love Hawai'in names! No connection other than that but she is likely to have a darker complexion.. I don't feel like it would suit a blonde so much!

steppemum · 23/01/2018 18:13

I think it is pretty and the first syllable is similar to the name Kai, so I assume people wouldn't have trouble pronouncing it.

I have a 16 year old relative who is Kaya, and I hardly ever see another one, so don't think that is too common.

I have to say that adding the middle names you have chosen does make it very heavily Hawiian and slightly odd if there is no connection, I would chose a different middle name personally

Meemzinha · 23/01/2018 18:23

My partner is part Persian/Indian and Azula is a made up character name from a TV show we like (Avatar, The last airbender)... It apparently derives from the Persian azul which means blue in many languages.

My parner loves Azula as a first name but I wanted something softer! We also love the following..

-Azalea
-Pandora (we're okay with the myth and love Panda for short)
-Zendaya
-Marley
... All very different names.
But honestly I don't think we've come across 'the one' yet!

Personally I’d go for Kaia. Still really pretty and unusual but without all the spelling / pronunciation issues.

FoofFighter · 23/01/2018 18:32

I know a Kiana (kee-are-nuh) which I think is possibly Hawaiian and v pretty :)

mojito55 · 23/01/2018 18:35

Reminds me of Kamala, which is a beautiful name. Not as keen on Kaimana I'm afraid!

RosaBaby2 · 23/01/2018 20:09

I like it a lot. I know a Hawaiian Kaimanu (boy Kai-mar-noo) I think it's a lovely name.

user1472334322 · 23/01/2018 20:42

I know a 7 year old called Azura. Pn a- zoo- ra. I love it, it's a great name. She also has a darker complexion and that type of name really suits her. Maybe that could work for your lo if you like Azula.
I like Kaimana too and would Pn as you would. I also love Kaia and other spellings! Good luck picking a name!

ShotsFired · 24/01/2018 07:21

You know Kaya is also coconut jam?

Meemzinha · 24/01/2018 16:47

Thanks for the heads up about the coconut jam, but that kind of thing wouldn't bother me at all! Plus it would be spelt Kaia or possibly Kaiya but I think that makes the pronunciation confusing!
