DH and I cannot decide on a name for DC2 who will be here very soon. We have a short list and a fucking massive list, which I won’t bore you with.

What are your thoughts on these? Some are DH’s suggestions. Some are mine.

  • Fergus
  • Gabriel
  • Wilfred
  • Hamish
  • Felix
  • Laurence
  • Nathaniel
  • Sebastian
  • Cormac
  • Marcus
  • Lewis
  • Matthew
  • Callum
  • Peter
  • Christopher (not to be shortened to Kit, by us at least, according to DH)

I LOVE Fergus and it’s near the top of my list but DH is having none of it.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 21/01/2018 10:16

I would go with Fergus, it's very cool ! 😄

Faintlinesquints · 21/01/2018 10:17

Really like Nathaniel, and nn Nate. Also like Sebastian.

Faintlinesquints · 21/01/2018 10:18

Oops missed your update!
Sebastian would be my favourite of the two, but it is growing in popularity. Fergus is a lovely name too and can imagine a cute toddler running around with that name, but likewise a professional adult 👍🏼

Dowser · 21/01/2018 10:19

As soon as I see Sebastian, I mentally say ..that’s a nasty ‘un Sebastian.

I like Peter. It’s a family name and grows with them. Have loads of male friends called Pete.
I also like Christopher very much and again gives the child flexibility to call themselves Chris or Kit as they get older
My cousin called her son Felix...she is cat daft though!
Fergus, we had a family lived near us called Fergus...or the Fergies as they were colloquially referred to

Laurie is nice but not Laurence
I like Marcus, another name that is easily shortened if the child wants.

I went for names that were easily shortened as I knew that’s what would happen at school.
I called my son Jonathon....a name I really like and no one ever uses. He was Jo from day One 😂😂😂
He probably never thinks of himself as Jonathon unless he’s filling out an official form.

Don’t like cormac...keep hearing caramac in my head.
I don’t like Wilfred either, probably because we had to do the poems of Wilfred Owen at school for give..somits forever tied up for me with the war and dying.

I think I’d better shut up...I’m no too being very helpful am I ?

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 21/01/2018 10:22

My stand-out favourite is Laurence.

Sebastian and Nathaniel are also nice. Peter and Matthew good too - retro in a good way.

Dowser · 21/01/2018 10:23

Oops! Where’s the put my foot in it smiley.

Good luck op.
Hopefully your child will love his name and if not , it’s not the end of the world..he can always change it.
Nothing seems to be set in stone these days.

Ohmyfuck · 21/01/2018 10:23

Sebastian (Seb)

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 21/01/2018 10:24

Oh, didn't see your last post.

Go with Fergus. I like it a lot. Didn't mention it before as wasn't sure whether you had any Scottish/Irish roots, but seeing as you do, I think it's a great fit. It's also a name that travels well (always important to me).

123namechanged · 21/01/2018 10:26

Sebastian and Felix are my favourites.

I've been watching Reign recently, and one of the men is called Sebastian- but they call him Bash.

MyHeartIsInHavana · 21/01/2018 10:28

Use one as a middle name??
Fergus Sebastian sounds better than Sebastian Fergus imo

Plus Sebastian is tres popular in leafy Surrey/south London

lynmilne65 · 21/01/2018 10:35

Nathaniel

lynmilne65 · 21/01/2018 10:36

My dgs is Felix

Leilaniiii · 21/01/2018 10:39

I love Wilfred, it’s really cool.

boosterrooster · 21/01/2018 10:51

You can't go wrong with the name Matthew. It's timeless and strong and you have the option of shortening it (if you want)

I also like Callum and Lewis

Good luck!

TheDailyMailIsADisgustingRag · 21/01/2018 11:03

Thanks all!

I’m secretly campaigning for Fergus. I love Sebastian too, but it’s a bit hard to yell across a playground in my accent! Fergus sounds equally good in the Irish and local accents imo.

I never thought Dh would go for Fergus either but he seems to quite like it.

flutteronbynow · 21/01/2018 11:49

I'd definitely go for Fergus. It's underused, cool & has a lovely sound. Sebastian is quite popular. Plus I personally irrationally really dislike the 'bast' part.

Dowser · 21/01/2018 12:07

😂
Chuckling flutter..it won’t be underused now it’s on mumsnet

Yep, go with Fergus and his mates will call him Fergie and that’s ok too.
Sebastian is bound to get shortened to Ian I would have thought

DiegoMadonna · 21/01/2018 12:18

Too many names so you need to cut it down to the ones you really LOVE. For me that would be:

Nathaniel
Felix
Sebastian

In that order.

TheDailyMailIsADisgustingRag · 21/01/2018 13:50

@diego

Weirdly, they were my final three! But Dh dislikes Felix and Nathaniel and said he’d take Fergus over Felix.

CakeRattleandRoll · 21/01/2018 15:18

Fergus is great.

clevername · 21/01/2018 17:01

I have a 5 month old Wilfred. It's an awesome name, with loads of options (he goes by Wilf or Wilfie usually).

I'm not a hipster. At least, I don't think I am!

clevername · 21/01/2018 17:01

Sorry, just noticed that Wilf is now off the cards for you!

Ikeameatballs · 21/01/2018 17:29

I love Peter, Laurence and Sebastian.

MikeUniformMike · 21/01/2018 20:07
