Name inspiration

I'm expecting DC2 in May and don't know if we're having a boy or girl. DH and I generally don't agree on names (although we do like the same style at least!) so we're not discussing it until baby arrives but I'm struggling for inspiration at all.

My absolute favourite boys name is Arthur but DH has vetoed it (just as I've vetoed Holly for a girl). I like quite traditional boys names but don't like boys names to be shortened so I know I have to like the common nicknames too (e.g. I love Christopher but not Chris). Having said that I do have a soft spot for Toby.

Our DD is an Emily so although I don't want names to "match", I don't want another E girls name and I want a similar style name. The only ones I can think of are Sophie/Sophia and Charlotte but I don't love either of them. I think it's the popularity of Emily that's making me think of these 2 popular names.

So wise ladies of MN, any name inspiration for me?!

I wouldn’t say Emily was particularly popular....as in, it’s beautiful but you don’t hear of loads of Emily’s in school classes so that’s good.
Names like Grace, Charlotte and Olivia etc much more common.

I love the name Elizabeth but you said you didn’t want to E names. I do think Emily and Elizabeth actually really pretty as sibling names.
My other choices...
Lucie/Lucy
Octavia
Isobel
Matilda
Georgia
Tess
Jess
Alice
Eliza

Boys...

Otto
Jake
Samuel
Jacob
Angus
George
Rory
Joseph

Emily goes nicely with Alice, Hannah, Jessica, Rebecca, Lucy, Rose, Charlotte imo.

I like James, Henry, Oliver, Edward for a boy.

Motherofbabydragons · 10/01/2018 17:10

Emily is very popular where I live but that’s because it is beautiful! I think Sophia is of a similar class and is equally popular. Also Isabella and Amelia. I like Lucy with Emily too.
I find boys names harder but I think Emily goes nicely with Harry, Henry and Oliver (although that would probably be shorter to Ollie)

Thanks everyone. I like Alice (but am slightly put off as Alice the camel is my daughters teeth cleaning song! Smile) and Hannah. I love Henry and James is my DHs favourite, I quite like Jonathan but not sure about John/Jon which he'd definitely get at school.

cautiousoptimist1 · 10/01/2018 20:48

Yes it's a good song and my DD loves bobbing to it! I knew it already as remember it from my sister being at Brownies but we now regularly sing it at Rhyme Time! It's a good one!

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread but I often wonder what the ending is on some threads in baby names so I came to let you know.
DD2 was born on Friday, we hadn’t settled on a name as we agreed to wait until baby was here. It took us a couple of days to discuss names and settle on it but our DD is Alice Mary. It’s had a bit of a lukewarm reception which surprises me but I think it suits her.
Thank you all for your help and suggestions!
