DC2 is expected in the next 5-6 weeks. DP and I have decided on girls' names shortlist but are stuck on boys. One name we both quite like is Randolph. Do you think that Randy would be a problematic shortening? We've already had to reject names beginning with B as DS1 has picked a middle name that starts with a J.

Randy is nice name, I like it.

Tinselistacky · 01/01/2018 18:26

Def would be worried about nn being used against ds in the future!!

sonlypuppyfat · 01/01/2018 18:27

No, you can't live in Britain and call someone Randy

BossyBitch · 01/01/2018 18:30

Horny reindeer, sorry!

And, yes, I'm perfectly aware that it's technically 'Rudolph' who's a reindeer and that you don't have to abbreviate it to 'Randy'.

Allthecake · 01/01/2018 18:31

Sorry, I'd hate to be called Randy so it's a no from me.

BlazingPaddles · 01/01/2018 18:33

Do you think that Randy would be a problematic shortening?

Hmmm, let me think.......

YES.

It would be very problematic for the poor kid! Step away from the Christmas booze and sober up.

FlopIsMyParentingGuru · 01/01/2018 18:36

Yeah. Not great imo sorry.

FreddieClaryHorshieLion · 01/01/2018 18:47

Randy... I’m sorry but I really wouldn’t.

What about Rudolph, Ranulph / Ranulf or Ralf?

HollyBollyBooBoo · 01/01/2018 19:02

Randy? Nooooo! Please don't do that to a child, his teenage years will be awful!

How about Rafe?

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 01/01/2018 19:04

Was also going to suggest Ranulph (Ralphie).

elQuintoConyo · 01/01/2018 19:05

Scott!

No you cannot give a baby a name that will become Randy when he's about 12yo FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE! Poor bugger!

Go for Ranulph. Or Clive. Or Jaxxon Squirrel. Or anything that isn't Randy.

SpottyBrolly · 01/01/2018 19:06

Thanks all, as we kind of suspected. We're going to spend the evening looking at names so no doubt be back to ask you wise folk soon.

Ranulph is nice. Randolph is very definitely a horny reindeer as suggested by pp. I think Randy is an acceptable name in America though. If you’re in uk or spend a lot of time here I would definitely reconsider.

restbiterepeat · 01/01/2018 19:07

Randolph the Randy nosed reindeer. It's festive.

SylviaTietjens · 01/01/2018 19:08

Jaxxon Squirrel is rather nice.

DramaAlpaca · 01/01/2018 19:08

Dear God, no. Randolph is bad enough but Randy.... dont do that to the child.

FreddieClaryHorshieLion · 01/01/2018 19:09

Sugarpie

I actually rather like Ranulph. I wonder if DH likes it as well... :)

Anyhow: OP, naming a child Randolph would be genuinely cruel imo.

WaitrosePigeon · 01/01/2018 19:09

Randy as is horny?! You can’t do that!

TheVanguardSix · 01/01/2018 19:12

You can call him Ray (Raymond is another name option but 'Ray'could work for Randolph too if you're not too keen on Randy).

Randolph is a great, strong, timeless name.

SylviaTietjens · 01/01/2018 19:14

But parents don’t get to choose their kids nicknames thevanguard. Especially fairly tenuous ones like calling a kid Ray when his name is Randolph. There’s no way he wouldn’t be Randy at school.

TheVanguardSix · 01/01/2018 19:15

What about Roland?

Sorry. I'm not British so I personally don't find Randolph bad at all.

SylviaTietjens · 01/01/2018 19:17

Roland is lovely (although I may be biased). I think Randolph is actually a nice name. But it would be turned into Randy which is pretty bad.

Other names I’d put in the Randolph category (just in case you need suggestions) are
Clovis
Casper
Torgeir
Magnus
Keir

TabbyCat864 · 01/01/2018 19:19

It's awful, sorry. It doesn't sound nice and you cannot give a child a name with the nn Randy. Also the 'olph' just makes me think of Adolf. I know that this ending is common in parts of the world but I wouldn't do it.

SpottyBrolly · 01/01/2018 19:20

Ooh Ranulph is a good suggestion. I'll see what DP thinks. Not that I'd ever use it but I like Jaxxon Squirrel, they sound like a super hero. And weirdly I know as I asked about Randy but Ralph is too closely linked to Forever.

Glad you've seen the light OP. Enduring a name like Randy would be actual torture.
