Jonas...?

My husband absolutely loves this name, probably because of the song My Name is Jonas by Weezer.
The few people we have mentioned it to have either wrinkled their noses a bit or just nodded politely (which I'm guessing potentially isn't that complimentary either!). Generally speaking, what does everyone think of this one? I'm not sure myself...

I had a fling with a member of Weezer, 20 something years ago. Haven't listened to them since!
Anyway... Jonas.
I prefer the German/Danish pronunciation 'Yonas', spelled Jonas.

Quite like the pronunciation 'Yonas' but I'm sure we'd have to constantly correct people where we live maybe I'm being pessimistic though...

I wouldn’t have thought of it but I really like the name. DS can always shorten it later in life if he prefers to Jon or Joe.

I like it :) I’m a German speaker so the Yonas pronunciation seems natural to me but the English pronunciation is nice as well.

Thanks all, it's nice to hear some positive feedback on it! I feel like our families have been very quick to be critical on it, which was disappointing for my husband and made me question whether we should go for it or not. I guess I shouldn't pay too much attention to that though as I'm not going to be able to please everyone!

I think it would inevitably get shortened to Joe/Jon/Joey etc but I don't mind that as I like all of them. And Jonas does seem to travel well, which is a bonus! :)

I like Jonas. As pp have said, it travels well and isn't overly popular. Good name.

I like it, has the same kind of ring to it as Jonah to me. There was a character on Stargate called Jonas - that's the only one I've ever heard of. I say go for it

I think Jonah is the biblical version - as in the Book of Jonah. I quite like it. I did think of the Jonas Brothers, though.

Fair enough. I looked up the name, it is indeed from the Bible, meaning "white dove" or "peace lover", "bringing peace", etc. In 1991 it was the 19:th most common baby name up here. It's been in use as a boy's name since at least the year 1303 according to a web site over all baby names. It's name day (cause for celebration, presents and cake) is on March 29 according to the same site.

I love Jonas. Knew a very handsome Swedish Jonas years ago!
