Heart vs head choices (2 of each!)

What the title says - DH and I have agreed on two possibilities for a girl name, and two for a boy, but I'm torn in each between my "heart" and my "head" choice. Thoughts?

Lucian
Tristan

Petra
Lucia

Wasn't Tristan the vet in All Creatures Great and Small
Wasn't Lucian the brother in the Liver Birds.
And Lucia as in Mapp and Lucia.

Lucia is gorgeous pronounced Luchia, I don't like the Loosha pronunciation.

backformore · 15/12/2017 01:56

That's super helpful - thank you! Useful to know that people don't really like the Loo-sha pronunciation, and that Petra is fairly well received.

Either Lucian pronunciation wouldn't be a problem for us, as there are lots of French speakers around (so I don't see the "Lucy" nickname being a likely problem, as it might be in some regions). Not sure how Loo-shun would be a mouthful?

@formerbabe, I actually gave away my preferences in an earlier post! You're partly right: heart says Lucian and Lucia, but head says Petra and Tristan. Though I could be swayed!

I think Petra and Tristan are the better choices.

Codlet · 15/12/2017 12:41

I like Tristan and Lucia (pronounced Loo-see-ah or Loo-chee-ah, not Loo-sha) best.

steppemum · 15/12/2017 12:49

I have only ever heard of Lu-see-an as the boys pronunciation.

Lucia, well I love Loochia as a pronunciation, but think Loosia is also common. Loosha doesn't really make sense to me.

JoJoSM2 · 15/12/2017 12:51

I would go with Tristan and Lucia.

FizzyGreenWater · 15/12/2017 12:56

Petra is really really lovely, and one simple pronunciation, and is well known but uncommon. Lucia - I know a couple, both prn Loo-chee-a, not so keen. Also Loo-sha prn terrible! Lucia far more drab than Petra.

I like both Lucian and Tristan but don't love them. Again, prn issue with Lucian, I'd say Lus-yan I think-?!

So not sure about boys, I guess go for Lucian if you are in a French speaking area, but Petra is miles better than Lucia.

CaptainChristmas · 15/12/2017 13:01

Tristan and Petra for me!

Like Lucien too though.

I dislike Lucia as the “loose” sound plus the “ee-ah” sound remind me of diarrhoea! I’m a bit odd though, I think.

backformore · 15/12/2017 14:00

@CaptainChristmas that made me laugh. I've been unsure about loose-iah, too...tho mainly because I wonder if it sounds a bit prissy...

Think Tristan and Petra are the clear leads! Thanks again, all :)

I studied art and always thought Lucian Freud was pronounced Loo-see-an. I know an eastern European woman called Lucia pronounced Loo-see-a. Not keen on your preferred pronunciations so prefer Petra and Tristan.

BertrandRussell · 15/12/2017 14:17

Lucian Freud was definitely Lu-see-an. But I think the correct pronunciation is Loo-shn

backformore · 15/12/2017 14:31

Yes, exactly. Think "Lucius" - it's loo-shus, not lucy-us :)

I agree with pps that the mispronunciation of Lucian and Lucia would just do your head in over time.

Tristan is completely fabulous and Lucian nowhere near. Ignore the hormones.

I prefer Lucia to Petra but couldn't deal with the pronunciation issue. I'd keep looking.

backformore · 15/12/2017 14:33

But anyway... I guess like most things it comes down to personal preference/regional variation. No such issues with Tristan, at least!

Petra and Tristan.

steppemum · 15/12/2017 17:36

I like this way of puttin it - lus -yan
I would be the same with Lucius - Lus-yus

There is just a hint of that extra syllable.

I know a Petra, nice name, veyr underrated and under used I think, probably because for a generation of us it was the Blue Peter dog, but that is so long ago now, even I don't have that association any more

Pemba · 15/12/2017 17:39

Lucia is beautiful, with whichever of the multiple pronunciations. Petra seems a bit plain (and Blue Peter dog).

I Iike Lucian, but other kids might perceive it as wussy, as it can be pronounced Lucy-un. Tristan actually is wussy.

tampinfuminragin · 15/12/2017 18:08

Petra and Lucian.

Mrscog · 15/12/2017 18:11

Not a fan of Petra, it makes me think of science equipment - Petri dishes for growing cultures!
like the others though.
