What do you think of Flora? I've heard about the spreading joke but have heard that people don't really use it much though it still worries me. I don't mind the margarine don't ever have it and just love the name Flora, the simplicity and elegance of it, very light and pretty imo. What do you think?

Love it but it does make me think of the spread. Wouldn’t use it for that reason but don’t think I’d think it was inappropriate if someone else used it.

I really like Flora but DH vetoed it due to the margarine

It’s my friends name and she hated it growing up as she was overweight so they made ‘too much butter’ jokes at her and then as we got older she had the teenage boys ‘I bet you spread easily’ jokes. This would put me off sorry OP.

The association with margarine never even crossed my mind until I read the thread. I think it's lovely.

An alternative is Fiore which is flower in Italian? It's prounounced fee-ohr-eh but you can change is slightly to Fiora?

I think using it marks you out as middle class enough to only ever have had butter in the house. The Floras I know definitely fall into that category.

A bit like Clover really that's a popular name in America but here it's mainly associated with a spread.

I went to school with a Flora. The boys used to say Flora spreads (her legs) easily 🙊

I know 3! All young adults. I haven't heard any little ones. I think it's lovely, if you can have Clementine and Olive, you can definitely have a Flora.

Its very petty but I'm another that would just think of the spread I'm afraid. but saying that I'm sure once your daughter is called that people would associate it with her instead

I knew a little Flora when I lived in Scotland. I think it’s fairly common there? Don’t know though.

I also know a Flora in her 40s.

I like it and the margarine doesn’t put me off. BUT, I do think of gut flora when I think too much about it. It’s definitely a bit medical to me, but then I am probably quite odd!

I do like Flora, but I might be put off using it myself if I thought people would make jokes about the name. It wouldn't actually occur to me, though. Fleur?

Would never associate with the spread as it’s my grandmothers name and also DD1s middle name.
