Names whose popularity mystify you

I feel I must be showing my age because I don't understand the popularity of Fern/e. I don't hate it, I am just amazed at it's immense popularity. Why do you think it has caught the zeitgeist at the present time?

Wren makes me think of wrench. Not a good word.

MikeUniformMike · 07/12/2017 19:00

Wren is just awful. The little bird is very sweet but as a child's name it's not.

Evelynismyspyname · 07/12/2017 19:31

I suppose any name which conjures up a very specific type of person is a mistake unless you can be sure your child will match the name.

Which is why classic names are so wonderful Wink

MikeUniformMike · 07/12/2017 19:40

I suppose Wren is a surname, so it would be OK as a middle name. Those I know who have nature type middle names hated them, but that was only two people.

mrsBeverleyGoldberg · 07/12/2017 19:41

No one ever says Tweenies about Jake or Bella!

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 07/12/2017 19:55

Terrible old names we could bring back by suggesting them on the names board:

Gary
Angela
Keith
Brian
John
Reginald
Simon
Paul
Adrian
Kenneth
Susan
Geoff
Sharon
Daphne
Janice
Caroline
Bernard
Patricia

(Apologies to anyone who has called their baby these names 😬)

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 07/12/2017 19:57

I like the old granny grandad type names myself:

Ruby
Elsie
Archie
Molly
George

They're cute!

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 07/12/2017 19:58

Charlotte is a pretty name imo.

Movablefeast · 07/12/2017 19:59

Reggie is already making a huge comeback! I can understand as I think It's very appealing Smile.

Hmm the only point of these threads is for posters to pat themselves on the back for their supreme specialness at choosing names whilst slagging off other people’s choices. I particularly dislike the nastiness which goes with all the underhand snobby ness about some names.

My children have names which mumsnet always slags off - wet, Common, dull etc - I have a name MN always raves about. Funny thing is I have hated my name all my life and my children love theirs (my dd chose her own middle name - another name loathed by MN).

Why slag off other people’s choices? People name their children with love and that is an amazing thing whatever the name!

boysarebackintown2 · 07/12/2017 20:11

Amelia- to me sounds like the name of a disease.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 07/12/2017 20:26

Harriet.
Effie
Lola
Ophelia

SylviaTietjens · 07/12/2017 20:28

It’s horrible isn’t it ollycat. But who else can you bitch about it to if not a bunch of fandoms on the internet?

My name and my dc’s names have all been mentioned on this thread - for one dc I am too aspirational and try hard, for the other I am too common and have put no thought into it whatsoever. And apparently the thought of someone with my name having any kind of professional qualification is absurd Grin.

southeastdweller · 07/12/2017 20:45

Why slag off other people’s choices

Indirectly we are but obviously that's not the point of why we've posted.

franktheskank · 07/12/2017 21:38

Olivia and Amelia. Just so boring and plain.

franktheskank · 07/12/2017 21:40

I don't know if it's still the top name but Jack is a name I've never really got but I have started to like it. I like the names that are classic but have a bit of character. My second eldest is callled George and it's my favourite name ever, I just think it suits all ages and I think of a lovely chubby cheeked little rascal, or a bit strapping manSmile

tinypop4 · 08/12/2017 06:45

I do not like the names George or Evelyn but this just a personal thing- I realise that other people really like them and I have friends with children called these names so I'm on my own there!
I have a Poppy though which I love but I know lots of people don't from reading mumsnet. I don't care though, so I expect no one cares if I don't like their children's names!

Dancinggoat · 08/12/2017 07:02

Audrey
Vivian
Brian
Barbara
Cei
Shay

There are more.

Vlogger · 08/12/2017 07:19

pipilangstrumpf · 08/12/2017 15:00

Vesper ?

extinctspecies · 08/12/2017 17:58

Vesper is a female character in a James Bond film.

Didn't know the name had made it into the mainstream.

MikeUniformMike · 08/12/2017 19:22

I know people with the names Gary, Angela, Brian, John
Simon
Paul
Adrian
Ken
Susan
Geoff
Sharon
Caroline
Bernard
Patricia

and they are all fine. I never thought ugh what a horrible name.
I know a tiny Reggie and my response to the name was "that's lovely".
