Unusual names

Hi all,

I am due to get married in 6 months and we are planning to try for a baby in 3 months time and announce the news at our wedding Smile
I'm so excited for this new chapter of our lives and my DF and I would like to start thinking about names.
Boys and girls, we love unusual names but I also really love old traditional names. I also love unisex names. Open to all at the moment!
Could you all give us a hand? Any people that you have met throughout your lives with unusual names?
Thank you!

Michaelangelo for a boy
Twinkle for a girl

AdrienneLouise · 03/12/2017 20:19

@WizardOfToss I thought it would be nice to give some background. And like I said, "I'm excited"

@Ponyboycurtis Eli is lovely! Also lovely to hear someone else has done the same thing. I'm sure it was a beautiful moment

Have my list of slightly unusual girl names, (which I’ll never use as I am currently expecting a boy and have no plans to have any more)!

Aurora (Rory for short)
Maple
Leonora (Leo or Nora)
Isadora (Izzy or Dora)
Maria (this is what we’ll use if this dc surprises us by being a girl)!
Juliet
Persephone
Andromeda
Athena
Xanthe
Saskia

LynetteScavo · 03/12/2017 21:02

Nigel is quite unusual these days.

LynetteScavo · 03/12/2017 21:05

Aubrey is traditional, unusual and unisex.

AdrienneLouise · 03/12/2017 21:14

@LynetteScavo Aubrey is my number one choice but unfortunately someone I know through a friend has recently named their daughter this. Not sure how weird it would be if I also chose this name...or if I would want to be that person 🙈

Everly is a close second, not sure if anyone has ever met an Everly before? Only thing putting me off of this one would be a NN of 'Ev'...it just sounds awful to me!

Ponyboycurtis · 03/12/2017 21:18

One of my close friends has a very young Everly, his older sibling has already shortened it to 'E' (which is also the NN for our Eli), my friend and her husband are trying not to copy!

BackforGood · 03/12/2017 21:21

To the person who said I need to give examples of names I like because there are thousands of names out there, I refer you back to my original post - tell me about people you have met with unusual names.

and I refer you back to my reply. If you are talking about really, really unusual names, we can't, because we are then identifying individuals.

However, earlier this afternoon it came into our conversation that nobody gets called Clive these days.

Hope that helps. Hmm

Mrsknackered · 03/12/2017 21:33

I know a Lunara, she is the only one I know (she's an adult) and I've always loved it.

Others I like:
Clementina
Liberty
Ariadne
Cecilia

Axel
Angelo
Oisín
Rohan/Rowan
Asher

Mrsknackered · 03/12/2017 21:33

Oh, and Ambrose. I really love it. It would never have been accepted by DP however!

ByThePowerOfRa · 03/12/2017 22:04

How about Evander for a boy? I love it, but Dh isn’t keen, (or else it would be on my list).

I’m not mad about Everly. It seemed to get mentioned a lot on here about 6 months - a year ago, so don’t know if that means it also had a surge in popularity..? I’ve never actually met one, so maybe not!

I also forgot how much I love Liberty for a girl, till a pp just mentioned it. I also love Cecily, (not Cecilia though for some reason).

ByThePowerOfRa · 03/12/2017 22:05

Also:

Ishmael
Isaiah
Josiah
Abraham

Love these^^ but all vetoed by Dh!

manicinsomniac · 03/12/2017 22:51

I don't think anyone is trying to be a 'busybody' OP I think they just want you to be realistic so as not to get your hopes up too high. Your wedding is such an important day it would be a shame to see you disappointed if things didn't work out exactly as you planned and most people on here have experienced first hand that pregnancy so often doesn't work like that. Good luck though.

Some lovely name suggestions.

A couple from me for girls...
Noa
Dahlia

And boys...
Avery
Ezra

SleepingStandingUp · 04/12/2017 10:15

Thing is OP if you post lots of superfluous detail you will get comments on it. No one is judging, just giving their advice.

Re unisual names:
*Serendipity
Ezekiel
Xavier
Raphaella

Also google lists of old names, Victorian era etc

honeyravioli · 04/12/2017 10:17

Oh, OP, are you so ready for a fall Hmm

How about Smuggery for an unusual name?

Blahblahblahzeeblah · 04/12/2017 10:23

I was 12 weeks pregnant at my wedding and ideas knackered and my dress hurt my boobs. I spent much of my honeymoon sick with lingering morning sickness.
In 2 subsequent pregnancies I miscarried and still felt utterly bereft at the 12 week point.
There's also the Zika virus which is still around in many popular honeymoon locations. My sister didn't need my advice and had to cancel her honeymoon tonl the Caribbean due to a prewedding pregnancy, as much as she adores her baby boy theres a little regret that she and her DH didnt get that special holiday before children.
My advice would be that for the sake of 3 months I wouldn't rush it. Your wedding day will be amazing enough without announcing a pregnancy too. Why not split the 2 things and have that exciting day twice?
