No.

lovelyjubilly · 02/12/2017 11:05

Never heard of it. Boy or girl?

EmmaGrundyForPM · 02/12/2017 11:06

Horrible.

Becles · 02/12/2017 11:06

No

TidyDancer · 02/12/2017 11:07

What's the origin? It's what I would describe as a 'clunky' name. Not keen tbh.

MaidenMotherCrone · 02/12/2017 11:11

It's a Welsh boy's name as I'm sure the Op knows.

If you plan on giving birth to a sixty year old sheep farmer with a red, weathered face and a chip on his shoulder go for it Op.

BewareOfDragons · 02/12/2017 11:12

Is that supposed to be a name for a baby?

Almost rhymes with Bald One...

Not great.

ElphabaTheGreen · 02/12/2017 11:12

Commonly-heard Welsh name in the Welsh-speaking areas, but one I'd associate with an old man, TBH. Lots of other nicer male Welsh names. A friend called his son Mabon, which I quite liked. Emyr? Dylan?

AdalindSchade · 02/12/2017 11:12

There are much nicer names out there!

Arf @maiden

Tinselistacky · 02/12/2017 11:13

Nn Mouldy Maldy??

ElphabaTheGreen · 02/12/2017 11:13

X-post with Maiden - that exactly!

UniversallyUnchallenged · 02/12/2017 11:14

How is it said? I think I like it, but often get pronunciation wrong

PopadomPointer · 02/12/2017 11:15

Thankyou for the honest replies.
So I'm guessing it's a no then?😊
Yes it's a Welsh boys name.
I'm still not discounting it yet though!Grin

Fun fact: the person who sang the original Fireman Sam theme in the 80s was called Maldwyn.

On a separate note, it really pisses me off when people go 'eurrrgh NO' at a name when they've no idea about its provenance. It's not a massive leap to go: oh, Maldwyn, Welsh name, I'm probably not qualified to comment. I once saw someone taking the piss out of 'Kacper' as a spelling - they had no idea it was Polish for Casper.

ACertainRatio · 02/12/2017 11:16

PS OP I love it, and love 'Mal' as a nn.

IamEarthymama · 02/12/2017 11:20

I am in South Wales and I like it, especially with Mal as the nickname

Glumglowworm · 02/12/2017 12:53

I realised it was probably Welsh, I live in Wales although not a very welsh part of Wales

My reaction is still “no don’t do it”

CottonSock · 02/12/2017 12:54

Lived in wales for 15 years and never heard it

NoSquirrels · 02/12/2017 12:57

Depends where you leave be. Great potential in most of GB for that to be pronounced wrongly...

thatcatpidgeon · 02/12/2017 12:58

I read it as ‘Mould-win’ in which case it just sound a bit off putting! Depends where you live, presumably if you are in Wales it would be less likely to get the ‘mouldy’ thing? The shortening of Mal could be good though.

FizzyGreenWater · 02/12/2017 13:08

As long as your surname is not Novello-Pugh Grin

PopadomPointer · 02/12/2017 14:44

Yes we live in Wales Wink

It's still a contender

niknac1 · 02/12/2017 14:51

I like it not sure I know how it’s supposed to be pronounced but it’s unusual. Is is it pronounced Malledwin?

DullAndOld · 02/12/2017 14:57

yes I like it, and Mal sounds cool.
For the benefit of Anglophones, it is mal -dwyn not mall - dwyn

DullAndOld · 02/12/2017 14:58

tbh most Maldwyns in Wales are old men.
