OP I absolutely love this name. I did know a very special old man called Maldwyn. Wanted to name DC it but DH vetoed. PLEASE use it!
For those asking pronunciation it's sort of Mal dwynne

cakeandteajustforme · 02/12/2017 19:17

I like the nickname Mal. But the full name makes me think of Baldwin. Which then turns to bald, and those dreadful actor brothers.

BestIsWest · 02/12/2017 20:16

Teifion! Yes, my Dad had a few friends called Teifion. Great name.

Sunshinesaz86 · 02/12/2017 20:37

Yes I'm aware of that dullandold I'm saying Cian is the welsh version of Kian!

FizzyGreenWater · 02/12/2017 21:22

Yes Teifion is really nice!

OP how about Talfryn - that's lovely, and shortens to the brilliant Tal.

BakedBeeeen · 02/12/2017 21:28

I'm sorry, but I think it's a really awful name. (You did ask!)

I have never lived in Wales.

EnidClowes · 02/12/2017 21:37

I had a great uncle Maldwyn and I love the name. Can see how I'm swimming against the tide on this one though! I couldn't get DH to go for it though.

BellBookandCandle · 02/12/2017 21:47

Now see, if you like Maldwyn what about Moelwyn?

Got both names in the family along with a Iestyn, Ianto, Dilwyn, Rhys and Efan

SumAndSubstance · 02/12/2017 21:57

If you plan on giving birth to a sixty year old sheep farmer with a red, weathered face and a chip on his shoulder go for it Op.

That's interesting actually. English old man names are all the rage at the moment. Is the same thing not happening in Wales?

BelafonteRavenclaw · 02/12/2017 21:59

I'm all for traditional Welsh names. My boys have lovely very welsh names and we love them. We do live in Wales mind.

Dolwar · 02/12/2017 22:42

I think it us a great solid Welsh name and if you like it, go for it.
It may be old fashioned and make peopke thimk of old men but think of all, the Alfie, Alberts and other old man games on here

PopadomPointer · 03/12/2017 08:53

Still like it Grin

villainousbroodmare · 03/12/2017 10:21

Go for it so! Nineteen out of twenty people will be HmmConfused but hey, it's your name... oh no, it's not...

CharisMama · 03/12/2017 10:24

Wow, I instantly thought of mould and the Maldron (cheap-ish hotel) so not having heard it before I would have to say no.

BehindLockNumberNine · 03/12/2017 10:27

Mulled wine? Bald one?

Nope, sorry.

MaidenMotherCrone · 03/12/2017 10:32

There are old man names and old man names though.

Cyril?
Dennis?
Maldwyn?

NoSquirrels · 03/12/2017 11:21

Look I like it too OP - with the proper Welsh pronunciation (Mal, short a). But any non-Welsh in seeing it written down would pronounce it Mould-win (or like Baldwin), and that’s just awful!

You live in Wales, so you’re probably safe on the pronunciation day to day, but then unfortunately you’re also open to the “old hill farmer” stereotype.

Those completely unfamiliar with the name will say it wrong & think it’s horrible.

Those who know the name may be prejudiced because it’s “old man” & therefore think it’s horrible.

If you like it, use it! Mal is a great short version for all purposes anyway.

SoupDragon · 03/12/2017 11:26

This is what I thought too.

To someone who has never heard it before, I'd realised it was Welsh and didn't think it was bad at all.

PopadomPointer · 03/12/2017 11:34

And yes I know it's an 'old man' name, but it was also my lovely grand-dads names....so I am biased Blush

foreverandalways · 03/12/2017 11:36

Please don't put the child through the ridicule of such a name for the rest of its life. He will not thank you for it at school age that's for certain. Thousands of names to choose from. It's 2017 nearly 2018! Definitely a NO ..

FizzyGreenWater · 03/12/2017 11:58

Grandad's name? OP this is what middle names are for! I like Maldwyn, makes me feel quite sentimental. It's a proper one of the old guard names. I'm thinking Gomer, Glanmor, Meirion, Glanffrwd- you know where I'm at Grin. It won't kill him. But - middle name, I'm just sayin'....

MikeUniformMike · 03/12/2017 12:26

Not RTFT but it is pronounced Mald (Mal with a d on the end) Win.
It's ok.

NoSquirrels · 03/12/2017 12:33

Oh - Granddad’s name? Use it. Nothing nicer than a family name, I think.

Erica891 · 03/12/2017 12:43

Not a fan of that name.

MikeUniformMike · 03/12/2017 12:55

Avoid any welsh name with Ei, Eir, Ir or Eu letter combinations as they are difficult to pronounced unless you are a Welsh speaker.

As it was your grandfather's name, use it. You could always do that rather Welsh thing of putting the middle name first.
Suggest David as a middle name but lots of others would go nicely.

David Maldwyn Pointer or Maldwyn David Pointer. Either would be known as Maldwyn but could use David when older if they prefer.
