Ashleigh?!

WannabeChild · 01/12/2017 08:26

DH and I have had so many disagreements over names, Ashleigh is the one name we can to seem to agree on.

However I have some reservations because I know Ashleigh was extremely popular in the 80s/90s (I'm born '88 so went to school with a few myself) so it does seem to be a name of it's time.

Honest opinions please, would it seem odd for a girl to be name Ashleigh in 2017?! Or is it due a comeback :)

it's OK but I really prefer the spelling Ashley
Aisling is nice too

BrizzleDrizzle · 01/12/2017 16:29

I dislike it but that's because I know an Ashleigh who is an unpleasant bully, I doubt it's the name though she gets it from her father

IVflytrap · 01/12/2017 17:16

I like it! I slightly prefer the -ley ending over the -leigh ending, though. Ash is a great nickname, and she's unlikely to one of many with her name at school, which is always a bonus in my opinion.

SnowyPolarBear · 01/12/2017 17:21

It's very outdated. And very American.

Modern versions seem to be Ashton and Aston.

Also, what about names like Ryleigh and Keileigh?

DramaAlpaca · 01/12/2017 18:05

I'm not keen on the Ashleigh spelling, it makes me want to put the pronunciation emphasis on the -leigh bit for some reason - Ash-LEE, which is obviously wrong.

Ashley is better, but I only like it for a boy.

Agustarella · 01/12/2017 18:52

I agree with the posters who don't like the spelling. It's like when people give their house the name Homeleigh (or Holmleigh or whatever) - the name is not great, but the cutesy spelling is so much worse.

Definate 80's and should stay there imo

KatherinaMinola · 01/12/2017 18:55

Like PP I prefer the more classic spelling Ashley, for a girl or boy. I quite like it as a name, though I think I prefer it for a boy.

tinypop4 · 01/12/2017 19:19

I like it for a girl but I have two friends with this name, spelt Ashley though.
I like it, but it is a bit dated.

Smoliver · 01/12/2017 20:50

As someone who is from the 90s, I definitely have met a lot of Ashleigh's my age. However, it's still a nice name and a girl named Ashleigh would most likely be the only one in her class.

PandaCat · 01/12/2017 20:56

If you like it use it! It's likely she could be the only one in her class when she starts school.

CAAKE · 01/12/2017 22:01

I know a lovely Ashliegh. Everyone calls her Ash, which is a great nn IMO.

BrizzleDrizzle · 01/12/2017 22:40

Everyone calls her Ash, which is a great nn IMO.

Or 'Fag Ash' if they don't like her?

ColinsVeryJolly · 02/12/2017 10:51

I know 2, one of 12 and one of 10.
The eldest spells it Ashlea.

RavenWings · 02/12/2017 15:09

I do think it's very American sounding. I don't personally like it, but I don't mind Ashley. Not liking Ashleigh.

Clairenewbie · 04/12/2017 01:30

If you like the name then choose it..never mind other people

RebeccaWrongDaily · 04/12/2017 15:01

really don't like it, it's a bit Kayleigh etc.
do you like Lauren / Hayley / Alison (Ali is quite sweet?)

NoelNiki · 04/12/2017 20:12

I know a female Ashleigh who hates it. The ash sounds, smoky, etc. She hated it.

ByThePowerOfRa · 04/12/2017 20:17

I don't like it much personally, but if you and dp both like it, then i think it’s totally fine to use it. Although it isn’t to my taste, I’d probably be pleasantly surprised to meet a baby Ashleigh. It’s quite refreshing.

butterflycatcher · 09/12/2017 19:34

Ashley is the male spelling and Ashleigh the female version.

I think it's a nice name and she is unlikely to be one of many :) unique without being obscure

franktheskank · 09/12/2017 19:37

I don't like any name with ley or Leigh in to be spelled Leigh. It's very (whispers) chavvy

Nottsangel2015 · 09/12/2017 19:58

My youngest dc is Ashleigh she’s 2, it was also the only name and dh could agree on lol

The only thing in hindsight I worry is her learning to write it as it’s such a long complicated name to spell when they are young but sure it will be fine. Def suits her!
Go for it op!
Here’s a pic of her :-)

Ashleigh?!
greendale17 · 09/12/2017 20:01

Very outdated, and considered "common" where I'm from

^This. All the naughty kids at school were called Ashley

Cockmagic · 10/12/2017 10:10

I had a friend called Ashleigh she hated her name, thought it too old fashioned and boy ish

This was in the 90s please think if another name!
