We can't agree...

Hi all
My partner and I were asked about baby names last night and although I thought we had already decided on two:

Kai Benjamin for a boy
Aurora Elizabeth for a girl

It turns out he actually has no idea. We think we are having a boy and mum in law (who used to run an antenatal ward) agrees. She got all excited and began looking through names for fun. Originally Kai and Elizabeth were his choices and Aurora and Benjamin were mine so we had a nice joint decision. However last night he said he is set on Freya for a girl and really liked Finn for a boy. Neither of which I'm even slightly keen on... I like names that are different and working in a nursery, some names are a no go.

What do I do? I've already given up the name Grace which is one I so desperately wanted so he could have Elizabeth instead and he only wants 2 children. Which will change if we aren't lucky enough to get one of each because I've dreamt of a daughter ever since I decided that I wanted children.

I also like the name Wolf for a boy... just adding that in haha.

I would choose literally any name over Kai.

Aurora is ok but I'm not keen on Freya. Just say no.

You've plenty of time yet.

You both have to agree so you might need to go back to the drawing board if he no Ionger likes the choices. Maybe look through the ons list together? Don't let your mil impose, it's your and dh's decision.

I love Benjamin and Elizabeth out of your choices by the way. Freya is also beautiful.

Kai is very very popular. It's not bad just really common.

Aurora hmmm makes me think of sleeping beauty just feels fictional.

Freya is beautiful and has strong Norse links.

Benjamin and Elizabeth are very pretty and shortened are still nice. Likely Ben and Beth.

Back to the drawing board I think. We did this with our names list about the same time and then went back to our originals I think it's pretty normal. It is a massive decision understandable to question it.

Have you had a scan?

Glumglowworm · 26/11/2017 12:18

I love Aurora Elizabeth! Not keen on Kai but I like Benjamin

But if you can't agree on those names you'll have to keep trying til you find names you both like. Would it help to know what sex you're having? To at least limit the arguments to one sex

Aurora is literally after sleepy beauty because she's my favourite disney princess. It's also the name of the northern lights.

Elizabeth and Benjamin are middle names only and they are his mother's middle name and my brothers first name.

He liked Kai for the same reason I like Aurora - link to a fictional character.

Yes we've had our first scan but we've just had a feeling it's a boy for some unknown reason. We're not fussed either way though.

Finn is much nicer than Kai. Why don't you let him have Finn if he lets you have Grace? (Aurora is actually nice, but I can't get past you naming your daughter after a Disney princess... sorry).

Finn Benjamin and Grace Elizabeth (tbh Elizabeth Grace would be better) are great names.

CrimsonKitten · 26/11/2017 14:28

I'm not allowed Grace as a first name because my cousin was named Grace but she was stillborn so it would be insensible . I just really don't like the name Finn

My phone had a meltdown...

It would be insensitive to name my child Grace but as my grandmothers middle name, I wanted it as a middle name too.

Finn just isn't a pleasant name for me. No offence, I just don't like it. Plus there's a boy I work with called Finn and he's awful... I wasn't keen on Kai either but I never thought of boy names because I always don't in treated of having a girl.

And as for Aurora, it's much more to me that just 'after a disney princess'. I went through shit as a child and that film brought me so much joy that the name has just stuck with me. I also originally wanted to name my children after the topic of the sky, stars and space (Aurora, Nova, Salina, Luna, etc)

Ugh I hate my phone

Always dreamed of having a girl

The best thing to do would be to sit down together and talk about your likes and dislikes together it's your decision not anyone else's and you shouldn't be sweyed by other people's opinions. The names you said you chose together originally seem to balance both your tastes perfectly.
