Never thought picking a name would be this hard!

I am 29 weeks pregnant with our first baby (boy) and we are looking for a name that is not super common, can be shortened into a nickname and is not too unusual.

This is our shortlist so far:

Aidan (nn Adie)
Maurice (nn Moss)
Otis (nn ???)
Robin (nn Rob - but I don't love this)
Howard (nn Howie)

Any thoughts, favourites or alternative suggestions?

Christopher (Kit)
Dominic (Dom/Nic)
Stephen (Steve/Stevie)

Although, I think you're making life harder for yourself. Why do you need a name that has a nn as you're now essentially searching for two names.

blueskyinmarch · 14/11/2017 16:28

Just choose a name you like. You don’t need to second guess the nickname. That should grow organically as they develop.

lunabear1 · 14/11/2017 16:31

Nathanial nn Nate?

ThisisrealityGreg · 14/11/2017 16:34

Why do you need two names? If you're going to call them Moss or Howie just pick Moss or Howie.

MrsFoxPlus4 · 14/11/2017 16:35

^ this.

Agree with pp
Try looking at names just because you like them not because of any nn they may or may not get called.
So if you like Otis then choose Otis, as a nn could develop such at Oti or it may not.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 15/11/2017 22:08

Lawrence -Ren/Lawrie
Conrad - Rad/Con

Justgivemesomepeace · 15/11/2017 22:11

I love Patrick (Paddy), Douglas (Dougie/Duggie), Gabriel (Gabe).

Smoliver · 15/11/2017 22:20

I like Robin and Howard. I like Otis too - maybe Oti could work for a nickname for that name.

How about...
Harold (Harry)
Johnathan (Johnny)
Wilfred (Will/Wilf/Freddie)
William (Will/Bill/Billy)
Michael (Mike/Mikey)

KnockMeDown · 15/11/2017 22:23

How about Daniel? Classic but not too common. Can be Dan or Danny.

pipilangstrumpf · 16/11/2017 09:16

Love Otis!

But why are trying to pre-plan a nickname? Otis is cool as it is. Any short form (Oat, Oatie?) sounds ridiculous imo.

What is this recent obsession with names needing nicknames?

BlueChampagne · 16/11/2017 13:04

Anthony
