Xavier is the Portuguese or Catalonian spelling of Zavier/Javier. It is usually pronounced Sha-vi-er. It needs a Z to be Za-vi-er but in English it is seen as ok to use X as a z sound rather than a sh sound. But it itches my ears to hear it. To be hay-vi-er it would need to start with a J.

I know a few Xaviers so I don't imagine anyone in particular. It is my son's best friends surname.

Heratnumber7 · 09/11/2017 10:42

I think it’s usually Zah-vee-er.
Any other pronunciation would mean a life time of him correcting people.

It’s a nice name though when it’s pronounced correctly

ToddlerIs2 · 09/11/2017 11:21

Our surgeon pronounces it Za-v-aire with his Italian accent but doesn't work with a working class Midlands accent. His Catalonian anesthesiologists said it pronounced Ta-v-aire which I adore but wouldn't work with the tradional spelling.

Ttbb · 09/11/2017 11:23

Nice normal name for a nice normal boy. There was a Saint Xavier I believe.

ajb17 · 09/11/2017 11:24

I would pronounce it zay-vee-er. I LOVE the name and most of the pronunciations to be honest. I think it sounds lovely and it’s not too common. I also like Xander.

Intercom · 09/11/2017 11:50

Ex public school rugby player with money and floppy hair. Not the most academic but popular and good at networking. Will work in the city and marry a fitness instructor who used to play lacrosse.

PrinceGeorgeTheCutest · 09/11/2017 11:53

Intercom love the detail. What is her name?

Not sure... depends whether they are adults now or about 20 years in the future Smile

PrinceGeorgeTheCutest · 09/11/2017 15:24

20 years in the future. Although curious about answer to both lol

I like the French pronunciation and I’ve heard of the ex-ay-vee-er pronunciation, but have never met one so could easily have been from xmen! I quite like those pronunciations, but for some reason don’t like the pronunciation in the op (sorry). May be because it’s quite like Xander and therefore sounds to me like it should be short for something?

Anywho, I imagine someone a bit like Xander from Buffy, (wow, managed to admit to liking marvel AND Buffy in one post Blush)!

heron98 · 09/11/2017 16:03

I think hot and French.

BernardBlacksHangover · 09/11/2017 16:10

The French pronunciation would make me think of a cool French guy. The ex-ay-vee-er pronunciation would make me think geek chic! Maybe someone like Q from the newer James Bond movies!

HettyB · 09/11/2017 17:48

If it was pronounced Zav-ee-yey then I’d think his parents were fairly intelligent/cultured, and probably had some French connections.

Pronounced Zay-vee-er I think it’s a bit try-hard, but that’s just me!

TaylorTinker · 09/11/2017 17:55

Sassh maybe that's St Francis Xavier lurking at the back of your mind?

I'd think of someone taught by Jesuits.

ThisNameNow · 09/11/2017 18:42

I'd have pronounced it Hav-ee -err ...but I can now see that I was confusing the Catalan Javier with Xavier. 😆

I'd not think anything in particular and I wouldn't automatically think anything if I heard of a D.C. Or a man called Xavier but I wouldn't be surprised if they had a French background.

Sweetmimi · 09/11/2017 19:15

I’d pronounce Xavier and Javier the same hav-ee-ay as both spellings are Spanish, but different regions

Whatififall · 09/11/2017 19:20

There's a Xavier at DD's school. He pronounces it Zay-vee-a.

(Although the hard 'a' at the end may just be our North-East accents.)

RosyPP · 10/11/2017 15:33

It’s a name you hear in Catholic circles - Francis Xavier

ShizzleYoDrizzle · 10/11/2017 18:41

Jesuit

grendel · 10/11/2017 18:54

Xavier (pronounced Zay-vee-uh because we are in the uk) would be cool and intellectual, with a twinkle in his eye. Love this name!

Twinkie1 · 10/11/2017 18:56

I think it’s a lovely name but makes you sound like a dick to call your kid it unless you have French, Spanish or maybe Swiss heritage.

BuggertheTabloids · 10/11/2017 19:23

Love love love that name! Would have been DDs name had she been a DS!

PrinceGeorgeTheCutest · 10/11/2017 19:46

Did you go for something non typical for DD?

OP posts:
BuggertheTabloids · 10/11/2017 20:06

No, classic name for DD though not too common these days for children.
My key thing for kids was no shortening of names to nicknames I didn't like!

Bouncingbelle · 10/11/2017 21:42

Friends have a little boy called Xavier, pro. Zav-ee-ay. They call him Zav for short. I thinks adorable for a little boy, cool for a teen and classy for A grown man.
In fact, why didn't i call MY son Xavier??!@
