Finally got DH to agree to two middle names for our baby. Been pregnant 6 months but been bugging him about this for around 2 years
We’re having Ruth as one middle name. We would have had it as a first name but my cousin is Ruth so we thought that would be weird. I want Brierley as a middle name too. Pronounced Br-eye-rly. It’s my mums maiden name and since her aunt and uncle had no children and she’s one of three girls, my grandma is the only one left of this branch of Brierleys.

Is it weird having a surname as a middle name? I know people do it with Lee etc. I also know I’d be forever spelling it. No one seems to get it right but I think it’s looks and sounds lovely

It’s nice. Won’t be forever spelling it because Middle names are used so rarely! I think it would even make a nice first name.

I don't think that spelling out a name is an issue when it's a middle name.

Middle names rarely get used, so I wouldn't worry about having to spell it out. It makes a pretty name.

I wouldn’t use it as a first name, but then I live in Yorkshire and it’s the name of a town here - it’d be like calling your child Sevenoaks.

Brierley sounds lovely and you should go for it

By us it would be a daft name because it's the name of an area in the town but its quite nice .

It's the name of a miserable town (well, Brierley Hill) and in my head it's said in a miserable Dudley accent. Br-oi-er-ly. Grim.

My mum's surname (she didn't change her name) is one of my middle names and I've also given it to my DDs.

I wouldn't do this with some surnames (eg my own surname which is similar to Harold - not a good mn for a girl...) but Brierley is pretty.

Its my maiden name - definitely use it! I always had to spell it though...

Completely normal to use a family surname as a middle day, usually the child’s mother’s maiden name, but grandma’s maiden name works too.

Definitely could use my maiden name. It has Dodge in it - not ideal! Besides, I was very pleased to be shot of it when I married DH.

I didn’t know there were places called Brierley. My grandparents were from Lancashire so I think it originates from down there

My dad is from near Blackpool, deffo a Lancashire name :-)

It's a pretty sound, I wouldn't want it as a first name but it's nice as a middle. I like Firstname Ruth Brierley Last name personally.

I quite like it as a first name. I like Briar and it's just a longer version.

It's unusual without sounding Essex-Younique or Hippy-Woo.

Our first name is Norah so Norah Ruth feels like too many Rs together. We also have Briar in our house name so it’s all tying up rather nicely!
